Unexpected Neighbours
B2When Clara finally signed the lease for her new flat in Willow Court, she thought her biggest worry would be fitting her old sofa through the narrow doorway. She had spent weeks imagining peaceful evenings reading by the window that overlooked the quiet courtyard.
What she had not expected was that within days of moving in she would be drawn into the lives of the people living around her. On her first Saturday there, while she was still unpacking boxes, Clara heard a loud crash from the flat above. She rushed upstairs and found her neighbour, an elderly man named Mr Harlan, lying on the kitchen floor surrounded by broken plates. He had slipped while trying to reach a high shelf. Clara helped him up, made him a cup of tea, and listened as he explained that his daughter had begged him to move into a care home after his wife passed away last year, but he had refused because he loved the view of the old oak tree from his window.
The following evening, a young woman called Lena from across the hall knocked on Clara's door in tears. Lena had just discovered that her landlord was planning to sell the entire building, which would force everyone to leave by the end of the summer. She had been saving for years to buy her own place and had thought she would have at least two more years to prepare. Clara invited her in, opened a bottle of wine from her own cupboard, and they talked late into the night. By the time Clara went to bed she realised she had already formed stronger connections here than in her previous building where she had lived for five years without learning a single neighbour's name.
The next morning Mr Harlan appeared at her door with a small potted plant as thanks. He told her that if the building really was sold he would finally accept his daughter's offer, but only if Clara promised to visit him sometimes. Clara smiled and wondered whether moving flats had actually been about finding a new home or about finding new reasons to stay connected.
