Irregular verbs ~19 min of the core left

Review 4 (lessons 19–23)

Start the lesson Core 17–19 min · steps: 4 · optional: +1

Declared core time. Two of the core blocks carry no figure at all, so the real lesson is longer than this sum.

Irregular verbs

4 min

Ten new ones, with three forms:

cut — cut — cut (use a knife on) hit — hit — hit (strike) let — let — let (allow)
lend — lent — lent (give for a time) lie — lay — lain (be flat, e.g. in bed) mean — meant — meant (have as its sense; want to say)
rise — rose — risen (go up) spend — spent — spent (pay out; pass time) steal — stole — stolen (take what is not yours)
win — won — won (come first)

Three of them do not change at all — cut, hit, let — and that is a trap of its own: the form does not show whether it is the present or the past; only the context does.

lie — lay — lain means "be flat, e.g. in bed". lie meaning "say something untrue" is a regular verb: lied.

Tricky point

3 min

each other — one person to the other, and the other way round.

We know each other. I know you, and you know me
They help each other every day. he helps her, and she helps him
We write to each other every week. I write to you, and you write to me

each other never changes its form; a preposition goes before it: about each other, with each other, to each other. Spanish nos conocemos, French on se connaît and German wir kennen uns say this with the same small word as "ourselves", so learners say ✗ We know us. In English it is each other.

Do not confuse it with themselves: They talked about themselves — each of them talked about himself or herself; They talked about each other — he talked about her, and she talked about him.

Checklist before lesson 25:

  • is it I was born, not I born?
  • where the time is named — the Past Simple; where it is experience — the perfect?
  • is there -ing after enjoy and finish, and to after want and decide?
  • is "in order to" to, not for?
  • is the pronoun in the middle of the phrasal verb?
  • does every sentence have it or there as its subject?
