Superlativul se formează la fel ca comparativul, dar cu the.

o silabă the + -est cheap → the cheapest, big → the biggest
două silabe, în -y the + -iest happy → the happiest
adjectivele lungi the most + cuvântul the most expensive, the most interesting

Aceleași patru excepții: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the furthest, little → the least.

the este obligatoriu aici — obiectul e unic în categoria lui, și asta e exact regula articolului din lecția A1 #14.

Două prepoziții după superlativ:

in — cu un loc the biggest city in the world
of — cu un grup the best of all, the youngest of my friends

one of the + superlativ + plural: Bucharest is one of the biggest cities in Europe. Substantivul stă aici obligatoriu la plural — e vorba de unul dintre mai mulți.

În română „mai” servește și la comparativ („mai scump”), și la superlativ („cel mai scump”); în engleză superlativul are cuvântul lui, most.

Pronunție

Accentul puternic cade pe adjectiv, the este neaccentuat:

It's the biggest city in the country. This is the best one.

the înaintea lui most sună /ðə/, iar înaintea unei vocale — /ði/: the oldest /ði ˈəʊldɪst/, o revenire la regula din lecția A1 #14.
