문법
5분비교급을 만드는 방법은 형용사의 길이에 따라 다릅니다.

방법은 언제나 하나, -er 아니면 more이고 둘을 함께 쓰지 않습니다: ✗ more bigger → ✓ bigger.
2음절 형용사 가운데 일부는 -er도 붙습니다: quiet → quieter, simple → simpler, clever → cleverer. 모음 하나 뒤에 자음 하나로 끝나는 짧은 음절은 자음을 겹쳐 씁니다: big → bigger, hot → hotter.
네 가지 형태는 규칙을 따르지 않으므로 외워 둡니다:

비교급 앞의 much는 '훨씬'이라는 뜻입니다: much cheaper, much better. 양을 나타내는 much(much water)는 13과에서 다룹니다.
비교하는 대상은 than으로 이어 줍니다:
This bag is cheaper than that one. Seoul is bigger than Rome.
than을 then('그다음에')과 혼동하지 마십시오: ✗ cheaper then that one → ✓ cheaper than that one.
같음과 다름:

한국어 화자의 오류
사용자 언어로 작성됨than만 넣고 형용사는 그대로

'저 가방보다 싸요'에서 '싸다'는 모양이 바뀌지 않고, 비교는 '보다'가 혼자 맡습니다. 영어에서는 than을 넣고 형용사도 비교급으로 바꿉니다.
'더'를 more로

bigger. '더 싸요', '더 커요'의 '더'를 more로 옮기기 쉽습니다. 짧은 형용사는 -er만으로 비교급이 되며, -er과 more를 함께 쓰지 않습니다.
'~와 같다', '~와 다르다'의 '와'를 with로

different from yours. the same 뒤에는 as, different 뒤에는 from이 옵니다. same 앞의 the도 빠뜨리지 않습니다.
발음
3분-er 어미는 강세 없는 /ə/이며, 거의 삼키듯 약하게 소리 납니다: bigger /ˈbɪɡə/, cheaper /ˈtʃiːpə/. 강세는 첫 음절에 그대로 남습니다.
문장 속의 than은 /ðən/으로, 강세 없이 짧게 발음합니다: bigger than Rome은 /ˈbɪɡə ðən ˈrəʊm/으로 들리며, 힘주어 말하는 것은 Rome뿐입니다. /ð/를 'ㄷ'으로 바꾸지 않습니다 (A1 4과).
