Grammatica

5 min

Il comparativo dipende dalla lunghezza dell'aggettivo.

come esempi
una sillaba + -er cheap → cheaper, big → bigger, old → older
due sillabe in -y y → -ier happy → happier, easy → easier
due sillabe o più more + aggettivo expensive → more expensive, interesting → more interesting

Il modo è sempre uno solo, -er oppure more, mai tutti e due insieme: ✗ more bigger → ✓ bigger.

good → better bad → worse far → further little → less

much davanti al comparativo significa «molto»: much cheaper (molto più economico), much better (molto meglio).

This bag is cheaper than that one. Rome is bigger than Milan.

Uguaglianza e differenza:

as … as This bag is as expensive as that one.
not as … as Milan isn't as big as Rome.
the same as My phone is the same as yours.
different from My phone is different from yours.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

more con gli aggettivi corti

✗ more big

✗ more cheap

✓ bigger

cheaper.

2

«Di» e «che» tradotti con of e that

✗ cheaper of that one

✗ cheaper that that one

✓ cheaper than that one

3

Il primo as che sparisce

✗ This bag is expensive as that one → ✓ This bag is as expensive as that one. Anche nella negazione: ✓ isn't as big as.

Pronuncia

3 min

than nel parlato è /ðən/, atono e breve: bigger than Rome suona /ˈbɪɡə ðən ˈrəʊm/, con l'accento solo su Rome. La /ð/ non è una «d»: è il suono di this, con la punta della lingua tra i denti.
