Al passato il verbo be ha solo due forme:

I / he / she / it was
you / we / they were
I was at home yesterday. Ieri ero a casa.
They were in Spain last summer. L'estate scorsa erano in Spagna.
Were you at work? Eri al lavoro?
I wasn't at home. Non ero a casa.

There was e there were sono come there is / there are della lezione 13, solo al passato: There was a café here, There were two shops on this street.

Espressioni di tempo passato: yesterday, last week, last year, two days ago, in 2020.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

was al posto di were

✗ You was at home

✓ You were at home

In italiano «tu eri» è singolare e «voi eravate» è plurale, quindi per una persona sola viene spontaneo usare il singolare was, come con I e he. In inglese invece you vuole sempre were, anche quando si parla a una persona sola.

2

Manca il soggetto

✗ Was at home yesterday, ✗ Was cold → ✓ I was at home yesterday, ✓ It was cold. In italiano «ero a casa» e «faceva freddo» sono frasi complete: la desinenza del verbo dice già chi è il soggetto. In inglese was non lo dice, e il soggetto è obbligatorio, compreso l'it impersonale della lezione 26.

3

people con il singolare

✗ There was a lot of people

✓ There were a lot of people

È «c'era molta gente» tradotto alla lettera: in italiano «gente» è singolare. In inglese people è plurale, quindi ci vuole there were.

4

Il passato prossimo tradotto con have

✗ I have been at home yesterday

✓ I was at home yesterday

In italiano si dice «ieri sono stato a casa» (o «sono stata»), e viene voglia di ricalcare il passato prossimo con have. Ma con yesterday, last year, two days ago l'inglese vuole il passato semplice: was o were.

Pronuncia

3 min

Nel parlato was e were sono deboli: /wəz/ e /wə/. Diventano accentati solo nella risposta breve e nella negazione: Yes, I was, I wasn't.

Per questo, all'ascolto, I was at home suona quasi come /aɪ wəz ət ˈhəʊm/ — è normale.
