affirmation I'll be working all day tomorrow.
négation She won't be coming to the meeting. (won't = will not)
question Will you be using the car tonight?
réponse courte Yes, I will. / No, I won't.

Dans la réponse courte, on ne répète ni be ni la forme en -ing : seulement will ou won't. Les adverbes probably, still, definitely se placent entre will et be : I'll probably be working late. À la négation, probably passe devant, avant won't : I probably won't be working on Friday.

Quand on l'emploie.

Le moment est en général dit clairement : at ten tomorrow, this time tomorrow (« demain à la même heure »), this time next week, all day on Saturday. Don't call at six — I'll be driving.

Second cas — la question polie sur les projets : Will you be using the printer this afternoon? Will you be paying by card? Will you be using the car tonight? If not, could I borrow it?

At eight we'll have dinner.
At eight we'll be having dinner.

Avec know, like, want, have au sens de « posséder » — le simple will : This time next year I'll know much more.

Encore des exemples :

This time tomorrow I'll be sitting in an exam.
We'll be living in Leeds this time next year. L'an prochain à la même époque, nous vivrons déjà à Leeds.
Will you be staying for dinner? Vous restez dîner ? — poli, sur les projets
I won't be working on Friday. Vendredi, je ne travaille pas.

On ne dit pas ça. ✗ Will you be come tomorrow? → ✓ Will you be coming tomorrow?

Quelle différence entre I won't come et I won't be coming ? Pourquoi ne peut-on pas dire I'll be knowing the results tomorrow ?

afficher les réponses
At nine tomorrow I'll be driving to work (ou travelling to work) ; la première sonne comme un refus, la seconde comme une information calme sur la façon dont les choses vont s'organiser ; know est un verbe d'état, il faut I'll know the results tomorrow.

Erreurs des francophones

adapté à votre langue
1

Pour dire qu'à six heures vous serez au volant : ✓ Don't call at six — I'll be driving.

La question neutre : ✓ Will you be using the car tonight?

3

Le refus involontaire

« Je ne viendrai pas à la réunion » est en français une simple information ; I won't come to the meeting sonne comme un refus : « je ne veux pas ». Pour prévenir sans froisser : ✓ I won't be coming to the meeting.

4

✗ This time next week I'll be knowing my results

✓ This time next week I'll know my results

Prononciation

3 min

'll be se prononce d'un seul souffle : /l bi/. I'll be working /aɪl bi ˈwɜːkɪŋ/.

Will you be using the car?

Are you around next week? I need to ask you a favour.

Not really, I'm afraid. I'll be travelling most of the week. I'm flying to Edinburgh on Monday for a conference.

Oh. Will you be using your car next week?

No, it'll be sitting in the garage all week. I'll be taking the train to the airport. Do you want to borrow it?

That would be amazing. My parents are visiting, and I'd like to take them to the coast.

Of course. Just don't phone me on Tuesday morning — I'll be giving my talk at ten.

Good luck! Will you be staying in a hotel?

Yes, near the conference centre. In the evenings I'll probably be working on my slides, but on Thursday we're having dinner in the castle.

Sounds lovely. And how do I get the car keys?

My sister has a spare set. Call her this evening, but not at seven — she'll be swimming then.

And what time does your flight land on Friday?

At six. So at eight I'll be sitting at home with a takeaway, and you'll be telling me all about the coast.
