Grammatik

Aussage I'll be working all day tomorrow.
Verneinung She won't be coming to the meeting. (won't = will not)
Frage Will you be using the car tonight?
Kurzantwort Yes, I will. / No, I won't.

In der Kurzantwort wiederholt man be und -ing nicht: nur will oder won't. Die Adverbien probably, still, definitely stehen zwischen will und be: I'll probably be working late. I probably won't be working on Friday.

Der Zeitpunkt wird meist direkt genannt: at ten tomorrow, this time tomorrow („morgen um diese Zeit“), this time next week, all day on Saturday. Don't call at six — I'll be driving.

Zweitens – die höfliche Frage nach Plänen: Will you be using the printer this afternoon? Will you be paying by card? Will you be using the car tonight? If not, could I borrow it?

Dieselbe Färbung hat die Verneinung. I won't come to the meeting – „ich komme nicht“, das klingt wie eine Absage: Ich will nicht. I won't be coming to the meeting – eine sachliche Mitteilung: So ergibt es sich eben.

At eight we'll have dinner.
At eight we'll be having dinner.

I'm meeting Anna at six – eine Verabredung (B1 #5): Das Treffen steht fest. At half past six I'll be sitting in a café with Anna – ein Bild von diesem Moment: was ich dann gerade tue.

Mit know, like, want, have im Sinne von „besitzen“ – das einfache will: This time next year I'll know much more.

Noch mehr Beispiele:

This time tomorrow I'll be sitting in an exam.
We'll be living in Leeds this time next year.
Will you be staying for dinner? Bleiben Sie zum Abendessen? – höflich, nach den Plänen
I won't be working on Friday. Am Freitag arbeite ich nicht.

So sagt man nicht. ✗ Will you be come tomorrow? → ✓ Will you be coming tomorrow?

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen I won't come und I won't be coming? Warum kann man nicht I'll be knowing the results tomorrow sagen?

Lösungen anzeigen
At nine tomorrow I'll be driving to work (oder travelling to work); das erste klingt wie eine Absage, das zweite wie eine sachliche Mitteilung darüber, wie es sich ergibt; know ist ein Zustandsverb, richtig ist I'll know the results tomorrow.

1

Richtig: ✓ Don't call at six — I'll be driving home.

2

Präsens in der Frage nach Plänen

„Benutzt du heute Abend das Auto?“ → ✗ Do you use the car tonight? → ✓ Will you be using the car tonight? Die höfliche Frage nach Plänen ist Will you be …ing?

3

Zustandsverben in der Verlaufsform

✗ This time next week I'll be knowing my results

✓ This time next week I'll know my results

Das Deutsche hat keine Verlaufsform, und wer sich „Zeitpunkt in der Zukunft – will be + -ing“ merkt, setzt sie leicht bei jedem Verb ein. Bei know, like, want, believe bleibt es beim einfachen will.

Aussprache

3 Min.

'll be spricht man in einem Atemzug: /l bi/. I'll be working /aɪl bi ˈwɜːkɪŋ/. I'll ist eine Silbe mit dunklem /l/ am Ende, nicht „ai will“. Die Betonung liegt auf dem Vollverb.

In der Frage Will you be…? sind die ersten drei Wörter unbetont: /wɪl jə bi/. Will you be using the car?

Text

5 Min.

Are you around next week? I need to ask you a favour.

Not really, I'm afraid. I'll be travelling most of the week. I'm flying to Edinburgh on Monday for a conference.

Oh. Will you be using your car next week?

No, it'll be sitting in the garage all week. I'll be taking the train to the airport. Do you want to borrow it?

That would be amazing. My parents are visiting, and I'd like to take them to the coast.

Of course. Just don't phone me on Tuesday morning — I'll be giving my talk at ten.

Good luck! Will you be staying in a hotel?

Yes, near the conference centre. In the evenings I'll probably be working on my slides, but on Thursday we're having dinner in the castle.

Sounds lovely. And how do I get the car keys?

My sister has a spare set. Call her this evening, but not at seven — she'll be swimming then.

And what time does your flight land on Friday?

At six. So at eight I'll be sitting at home with a takeaway, and you'll be telling me all about the coast.
