affermazione I'll be working all day tomorrow.
negazione She won't be coming to the meeting. (won't = will not)
domanda Will you be using the car tonight?
risposta breve Yes, I will. / No, I won't.

Nella risposta breve be e -ing non si ripetono: solo will o won't. Gli avverbi probably, still, definitely si mettono tra will e be: I'll probably be working late. Nella negazione probably passa davanti, prima di won't: I probably won't be working on Friday.

Di solito il momento è detto chiaramente: at ten tomorrow, this time tomorrow («domani a quest'ora»), this time next week, all day on Saturday. Don't call at six — I'll be driving. L'azione può anche occupare tutto il periodo: I'll be working all day on Saturday — il sabato intero se ne andrà nel lavoro.

Il secondo è la domanda cortese sui programmi: Will you be using the printer this afternoon? Will you be paying by card? E tu, saputi i suoi programmi, puoi chiedere qualcosa, se non le dispiace: Will you be using the car tonight? If not, could I borrow it?

La negazione ha la stessa sfumatura. I won't come to the meeting — «non vengo», suona come un rifiuto: non voglio. I won't be coming to the meeting — una comunicazione tranquilla: le cose vanno così.

Confronta con will semplice.

At eight we'll have dinner.
At eight we'll be having dinner.

I'm meeting Anna at six — un accordo preso (B1 #5): l'incontro è fissato. At half past six I'll be sitting in a café with Anna — l'immagine di quel momento: che cosa starò facendo.

Con know, like, want, have nel senso di «possedere» si usa will semplice: This time next year I'll know much more.

Altri esempi:

This time tomorrow I'll be sitting in an exam. Domani a quest'ora starò facendo un esame.
We'll be living in Leeds this time next year. L'anno prossimo a quest'ora vivremo già a Leeds.
Will you be staying for dinner? Resti a cena? — con garbo, sui programmi
I won't be working on Friday. Venerdì non lavoro.

Così non si dice. ✗ Will you be come tomorrow? → ✓ Will you be coming tomorrow?

At nine tomorrow I'll be driving to work (o travelling to work); la prima suona come un rifiuto, la seconda come una comunicazione tranquilla su come andranno le cose; know è un verbo di stato, ci vuole I'll know the results tomorrow.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

«Non chiamarmi alle sei, guido» → ✗ Don't call at six — I drive → ✓ Don't call at six — I'll be driving.

→ ✗ Do you use the car tonight?, ✗ Do you come to the meeting on Friday? → ✓ Will you be using the car tonight?, Will you be coming to the meeting on Friday? In italiano il presente per il futuro vicino è normalissimo; in inglese Do you use…? chiede di un'abitudine.

3

I won't come come comunicazione neutra

Per informare con calma — ✓ I won't be coming to the meeting.

Pronuncia

3 min

'll be si pronuncia in un solo fiato: /l bi/. I'll be working /aɪl bi ˈwɜːkɪŋ/.

Nella domanda Will you be…? le prime tre parole sono atone: /wɪl jə bi/. Will you be using the car?

Testo

5 min

Are you around next week? I need to ask you a favour.

Not really, I'm afraid. I'll be travelling most of the week. I'm flying to Edinburgh on Monday for a conference.

Oh. Will you be using your car next week?

No, it'll be sitting in the garage all week. I'll be taking the train to the airport. Do you want to borrow it?

That would be amazing. My parents are visiting, and I'd like to take them to the coast.

Of course. Just don't phone me on Tuesday morning — I'll be giving my talk at ten.

Good luck! Will you be staying in a hotel?

Yes, near the conference centre. In the evenings I'll probably be working on my slides, but on Thursday we're having dinner in the castle.

Sounds lovely. And how do I get the car keys?

My sister has a spare set. Call her this evening, but not at seven — she'll be swimming then.

And what time does your flight land on Friday?

At six. So at eight I'll be sitting at home with a takeaway, and you'll be telling me all about the coast.
