Tempo declarado do núcleo.
É o gêmeo do Past Continuous (A2 #2): lá, o fundo no passado (At ten I was flying); aqui, o fundo no futuro (At ten I'll be flying).
A forma: will be + verbo com -ing. will e be são iguais para todas as pessoas; só muda o verbo principal.
| afirmação | I'll be working all day tomorrow. |
| negação | She won't be coming to the meeting. (won't = will not) |
| pergunta | Will you be using the car tonight? |
| resposta curta | Yes, I will. / No, I won't. |
Na resposta curta não se repetem be e o -ing: só will ou won't. Os advérbios probably, still, definitely ficam entre will e be: I'll probably be working late. Na negação, probably passa para a frente, antes de won't: I probably won't be working on Friday.
Em geral o momento é dito com todas as letras: at ten tomorrow, this time tomorrow (“amanhã a esta hora”), this time next week, all day on Saturday. Don't call at six — I'll be driving. A ligação vai cair no meio da viagem: vou estar dirigindo. O processo também pode ocupar o trecho inteiro: I'll be working all day on Saturday — o sábado todo vai ser de trabalho.
O segundo — a pergunta educada sobre planos: Will you be using the printer this afternoon? Will you be paying by card? Will you be using the car tonight? If not, could I borrow it?
A negação tem o mesmo tom. I won't come to the meeting — “não vou”, parece uma recusa: não quero. I won't be coming to the meeting — uma informação tranquila: é assim que as coisas estão.
Compare com o will simples.
| At eight we'll have dinner. | Às oito a gente janta: o jantar começa às oito. |
| At eight we'll be having dinner. |
E com o Present Continuous. I'm meeting Anna at six — um compromisso combinado (B1 #5): o encontro está marcado. At half past six I'll be sitting in a café with Anna — a imagem daquele momento: o que vou estar fazendo.
Com know, like, want, have no sentido de “ter”, fica o will simples: This time next year I'll know much more.
Mais exemplos:
| This time tomorrow I'll be sitting in an exam. |
| We'll be living in Leeds this time next year. |
| Will you be staying for dinner? | Você fica para o jantar? — com educação, sobre os planos |
| I won't be working on Friday. | Na sexta eu não trabalho. |
Assim não se diz. ✗ Will you be come tomorrow? → ✓ Will you be coming tomorrow?
Qual é a diferença entre I won't come e I won't be coming?

“Semana que vem eu já vou estar sabendo o resultado” → ✗ This time next week I'll be knowing my results → ✓ This time next week I'll know my results. Na fala, “vou estar sabendo”, “vou estar precisando” soam naturais, mas know, like, want não vão para o -ing em nenhum tempo (B1 #4): aqui fica o will simples.
O sujeito que some
“Às dez vou estar dando a palestra”, “vai estar parado na garagem” → ✗ At ten will be giving my talk, ✗ No, will be sitting in the garage → ✓ At ten I'll be giving my talk, ✓ No, it'll be sitting in the garage.
Mas Will you use the car tonight? soa como se você quisesse o carro ou estivesse reclamando; a pergunta neutra é ✓ Will you be using the car tonight? Com a negação, igual: “não vou à reunião” é só uma informação, I won't come to the meeting soa como recusa; ✓ I won't be coming to the meeting.
Pronúncia
3 min'll be se diz num fôlego só: /l bi/. I'll be working /aɪl bi ˈwɜːkɪŋ/. I'll é uma sílaba só, com um /l/ escuro no fim: a ponta da língua toca atrás dos dentes de cima, e o /l/ não vira “u”, como no fim de “Brasil”; nada de “ai uil”. O acento cai no verbo principal.
Na pergunta Will you be…? as três primeiras palavras são átonas: /wɪl jə bi/. Will you be using the car?
Texto
5 minAre you around next week? I need to ask you a favour.
Not really, I'm afraid. I'll be travelling most of the week. I'm flying to Edinburgh on Monday for a conference.
Oh. Will you be using your car next week?
No, it'll be sitting in the garage all week. I'll be taking the train to the airport. Do you want to borrow it?
That would be amazing. My parents are visiting, and I'd like to take them to the coast.
Of course. Just don't phone me on Tuesday morning — I'll be giving my talk at ten.
Good luck! Will you be staying in a hotel?
Yes, near the conference centre. In the evenings I'll probably be working on my slides, but on Thursday we're having dinner in the castle.
Sounds lovely. And how do I get the car keys?
My sister has a spare set. Call her this evening, but not at seven — she'll be swimming then.
And what time does your flight land on Friday?
At six. So at eight I'll be sitting at home with a takeaway, and you'll be telling me all about the coast.
