In A2 #27 war die Bedingung real: If it rains, I'll stay at home – Regen ist gut möglich.

Die Form: if + Vergangenheitsform, im Hauptsatz would + Grundform.

Aussage If I had more time, I'd learn Italian.
Verneinung If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't get up at six.
Frage What would you do if you won the lottery?
Kurzantwort Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't.

'd ist die Kurzform von would, dieselbe wie in I'd like (A2 #17). Die Teile kann man vertauschen: I'd learn Italian if I had more time. Statt would steht manchmal could – „könnte“: If I had a car, I could drive to work.

Die Vergangenheitsform heißt hier nicht Vergangenheit. If I had more time – das betrifft den heutigen Tag. Die Vergangenheitsform rückt das Ereignis von der Wirklichkeit weg – genau wie im höflichen Could you…? (A2 #17).

Über etwas, das jetzt nicht so ist: If I lived by the sea, I'd swim every day.

What would you do if you won a million pounds? Gewinnen ist fast unmöglich, deshalb Typ 2.

Für einen Rat: If I were you, I'd…

If I get the job, I'll move to Bristol.
If I got the job, I'd move to Bristol.

were für alle Personen. Nach if hat be eine besondere Form – were, sogar mit I, he, she: If I were rich…, If she were here…

Ein Rat: If I were you, I'd… – „an deiner Stelle würde ich…“. Hier sagen Muttersprachler fast immer were: If I were you, I'd talk to your manager. I wouldn't buy that car if I were you. Oft lässt man den ersten Teil weg: I'd talk to your manager – „an deiner Stelle“ versteht sich von selbst.

would ohne if. It would be nice to have a garden. – „Es wäre schön, einen Garten zu haben.“ I'd never do that. – „Das würde ich nie tun.“ Which city would you like to live in? Deshalb hört man would so oft in Träumen, Urteilen und höflichen Fragen.

Noch mehr Beispiele:

If I knew her number, I'd call her.
If it wasn't so expensive, we'd go more often.
I'd be happier if I didn't live so far from work.
Would you live abroad if you could?

✗ If I had more time, I will learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I'd learn Italian.

Teste dich selbst. Was bedeutet If I had a car, I'd drive to work: Gibt es ein Auto oder nicht? If I ___ (win), I ___ (buy) a house weiter?

Lösungen anzeigen
Es gibt kein Auto – die Vergangenheitsform nach if spricht über Unwirkliches; If I were you, I wouldn't worry (oder I wouldn't worry if I were you); Typ 2: If I won, I'd buy a house.

Typische Fehler deutschsprachiger Lernender

für Ihre Sprache geschrieben
1

would in beiden Teilen

If I would have more time, I would learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I would learn Italian.

2

„wenn“ als when

✗ When I had more time, I would learn Italian (im Sinn von „wenn ich … hätte“) → ✓ If I had more time, I would learn Italian. Eine Vorstellung braucht if.

3

Verb vor dem Subjekt im Hauptsatz

„…, würde ich Italienisch lernen“ → ✗ If I had more time, would I learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I would learn Italian.

4

„An deiner Stelle“ wörtlich

✗ On your place I would talk to him

✓ If I were you, I'd talk to him

Die übliche englische Formel für einen Rat ist If I were you; at your place gibt es, es heißt aber „bei dir (zu Hause)“.

Aussprache

4 Min.

would schrumpft in der Aussage zu /d/: I'd learn /aɪd ˈlɜːn/. Beim Hören unterscheidet es sich von I learn nur durch einen Laut, deshalb achte auf if und die Vergangenheitsform daneben: Sie verraten, dass gleich would kommt.

Das volle would – /wʊd/, reimt sich auf good, das l spricht man nicht. Voll und betont ist es in der Kurzantwort: Yes, I would. In der Frage und nach einem Nomen, ohne Betonung, ist es schwach – /wəd/: What would you do? /ˈwɒt wəd ju ˈduː/. wouldn't – /ˈwʊdnt/, ohne Vokal zwischen /d/ und /n/.

were in If I were you ist unbetont – /wə/: /ɪf aɪ wə ˈjuː/.

Text

This week we asked our readers: what would you do if you didn't have to work for a year?

Megan, a nurse from Cardiff: "I'd learn Italian properly. I'd find a small flat in Bologna, and I wouldn't speak a word of English for twelve months. If I lived there, I'd go to the market every morning and cook real Italian food. It would be a big adventure."

Dev, a taxi driver from Leeds: "Honestly? I'd sleep for a week first. Then I'd walk round the whole coast of Wales. It's about 870 miles, so if I walked twenty miles a day, I could finish it in about six weeks."

Lucy, a student from Belfast: "I wouldn't travel — everybody says that. I'd make my own computer game. I already have the idea. If I had more time, I'd finish it in a few months."

One reader sent us a different question: "My job is boring, but it's safe. Should I leave?" Our advice: if we were you, we wouldn't leave without a plan. We'd start an evening course first. If you enjoyed it, you could change jobs next year.

Schreiben

Fünf bis sechs Sätze: was du tun würdest, wenn du ein Jahr lang nicht arbeiten müsstest, und ein Rat an einen Freund mit If I were you.

Muster

If I didn't have to work for a year, I'd travel round South America. I'd learn Spanish on the way, and I'd write a blog about the trip. If I had enough money, I'd also buy a good camera. My friend Tom wants to leave his job, but he hasn't found a new one yet. I said to him: "If I were you, I wouldn't leave without a plan."
