Kai reikia pasakyti apie du dalykus iš karto, anglų kalba ima jungtukų porą. Tokių porų trys, ir pagal prasmę jos atitinka lietuviškus „ir… ir“, „arba… arba“, „nei… nei“.

Forma:

both … and ir… ir, abu Both my brother and my sister live abroad.
either … or arba… arba, vienas iš dviejų We can meet either on Monday or on Tuesday.
neither … nor nei… nei Neither the train nor the bus was running.

Kada vartojama.

both … and sujungia: teisinga ir viena, ir kita. Veiksnys su both … and visada daugiskaitos, ir veiksmažodis taip pat: Both Tom and Anna are coming.

either … or siūlo pasirinkimą: teisinga viena iš dviejų. You can either pay now or pay later. Either Mark or Lucy will meet you at the station. Pora gali jungti ir du ištisus sakinius — taip skamba sąlygos ir ultimatumai: Either you tell him, or I will. („Arba tu jam pasakysi, arba aš.“) Prieš antrąją dalį tada dedamas kablelis.

neither … nor neigia abu: neteisinga nei viena, nei kita. Ši pora pati turi neigimą, todėl veiksmažodis po jos teigiamas: Neither Tom nor Anna has called. Lietuviškai „nei Tomas, nei Ana nepaskambino“ — neigimas skamba du kartus, angliškai — vieną. Tai pagrindinė temos taisyklė.

Su kuriuo žodžiu derinamas veiksmažodis. Po either … or ir neither … nor veiksmažodis žiūri į artimiausią jam veiksnį: Neither my brother nor my parents are at home. Either my parents or my sister is going to pick you up. Šnekamojoje kalboje po neither … nor dažnai vartojama daugiskaita ir dviem vienaskaitos veiksniams — Neither Tom nor Anna have called; rašant patikimiau vienaskaita.

Kur stovi jungtukai. Kiekvienas jungtukas stovi tiesiai prieš savo dalį, ir dalys turi būti vienodos rūšies: du daiktavardžiai, du veiksmažodžiai, dvi aplinkybės. She speaks both French and German. — po jungtukų dvi kalbos. We can either take a taxi or walk. — po jungtukų du veiksmai. He neither called nor wrote. — jis nei paskambino, nei parašė.

Palyginkite neither … nor su įprastu neigimu:

I don't like tea or coffee. įprastas pokalbis
I like neither tea nor coffee. knygiškai ir su pabrėžimu

Patys jungtukai nekirčiuoti; kirtis tenka tam, ką jie jungia: „both TOM and ANna“. Prieš antrąją dalį daroma trumpa pauzė, kad pasirinkimas ar išvardijimas būtų girdimas.

Dar pavyzdžių:

Both the hotel and the restaurant were full. Ir viešbutis, ir restoranas buvo pilni.
The flat is both cheap and close to the station. Butas ir pigus, ir arti stoties.
You can either call or send a message. Galima paskambinti arba parašyti.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ Neither the train nor the bus wasn't running → ✓ Neither the train nor the bus was running. Antrasis neigimas nereikalingas.

Pasitikrinkite. Kaip pasakyti „nei Tomas, nei Ana neatėjo“? Kokio veiksmažodžio reikia sakinyje Both my sister and my brother ___ (live) in York? Kas negerai sakinyje She both speaks French and German?

rodyti atsakymus
Neither Tom nor Anna came; live — po both … and veiksmažodis visada daugiskaitos; both stovi ne prieš savo dalį: She speaks both French and German.
