A forma:

both … and tanto… quanto, os dois Both my brother and my sister live abroad.
either … or ou… ou, um dos dois We can meet either on Monday or on Tuesday.
neither … nor nem… nem Neither the train nor the bus was running.

Quando se usa.

both … and une: as duas coisas são verdade. O sujeito com both … and é sempre plural, e o verbo também: Both Tom and Anna are coming.

You can either pay now or pay later. Either Mark or Lucy will meet you at the station. O par pode unir também duas frases inteiras — é assim que soam as condições e os ultimatos: Either you tell him, or I will.

Depois de either … or e neither … nor, o verbo olha para o sujeito mais próximo dele: Neither my brother nor my parents are at home. Either my parents or my sister is going to pick you up.

Onde ficam as conjunções. She speaks both French and German. — depois das conjunções, duas línguas. We can either take a taxi or walk. — depois das conjunções, duas ações. He neither called nor wrote. — ele não ligou nem escreveu.

Compare neither … nor com a negação comum:

I don't like tea or coffee. conversa do dia a dia
I like neither tea nor coffee. formal e com ênfase

Both the hotel and the restaurant were full. Tanto o hotel quanto o restaurante estavam lotados.
The flat is both cheap and close to the station.
You can either call or send a message. Você pode ligar ou mandar uma mensagem.

Assim não se diz. ✗ Neither the train nor the bus wasn't running → ✓ Neither the train nor the bus was running.

Que verbo vai em Both my sister and my brother ___ (live) in York? O que está errado em She both speaks French and German?

mostrar as respostas
Neither Tom nor Anna came; live — depois de both … and o verbo vai sempre no plural; both não está logo antes da sua parte: She speaks both French and German.
