Smalkā tēma

10 min

Forma:

both … and gan… gan, abi Both my brother and my sister live abroad.
either … or vai nu… vai, viens no diviem We can meet either on Monday or on Tuesday.
neither … nor ne… ne Neither the train nor the bus was running.

Kad lieto.

both … and apvieno: patiess ir gan viens, gan otrs. Teikuma priekšmets ar both … and vienmēr ir daudzskaitlī, un darbības vārds arī: Both Tom and Anna are coming.

either … or piedāvā izvēli: patiess ir viens no diviem. You can either pay now or pay later. Either Mark or Lucy will meet you at the station. Pāris var savienot arī divus veselus teikumus — tā skan nosacījumi un ultimāti: Either you tell him, or I will. („Vai nu tu viņam pateiksi, vai es.”) Pirms otrās daļas tad liek komatu.

neither … nor noliedz abus: nav patiess ne viens, ne otrs. Šis pāris pats nes noliegumu, tāpēc darbības vārds pēc tā ir apgalvojuma formā: Neither Tom nor Anna has called. Latviski „ne Toms, ne Anna nav piezvanījuši” — noliegums skan divreiz, angliski — vienreiz. Tas ir tēmas galvenais likums.

Ar kuru vārdu saskaņo darbības vārdu. Pēc either … or un neither … nor darbības vārds skatās uz tuvāko teikuma priekšmetu: Neither my brother nor my parents are at home. Either my parents or my sister is going to pick you up. Sarunā pēc neither … nor bieži liek daudzskaitli arī diviem vienskaitļa priekšmetiem — Neither Tom nor Anna have called; rakstos drošāk ir vienskaitlis.

Kur stāv saikļi. Katrs saiklis stāv tieši pirms savas daļas, un daļām jābūt vienāda veida: divi lietvārdi, divi darbības vārdi, divi apstākļi. She speaks both French and German. — pēc saikļiem divas valodas. We can either take a taxi or walk. — pēc saikļiem divas darbības. He neither called nor wrote. — viņš nepiezvanīja un neuzrakstīja.

Salīdziniet neither … nor ar parasto noliegumu:

I don't like tea or coffee. parasta saruna
I like neither tea nor coffee. grāmatnieciski un ar uzsvaru

Paši saikļi ir neuzsvērti; uzsvars krīt uz to, ko tie savieno: „both TOM and ANna”.

Both the hotel and the restaurant were full. Gan viesnīca, gan restorāns bija pilni.
The flat is both cheap and close to the station. Dzīvoklis ir gan lēts, gan tuvu stacijai.
You can either call or send a message. Var piezvanīt vai uzrakstīt.

Tā nesaka. ✗ Neither the train nor the bus wasn't running → ✓ Neither the train nor the bus was running. Otrais noliegums ir lieks.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Kā pateikt „ne Toms, ne Anna neatnāca”? Kāds darbības vārds vajadzīgs teikumā Both my sister and my brother ___ (live) in York? Kas nav kārtībā teikumā She both speaks French and German?

rādīt atbildes
Neither Tom nor Anna came; live — pēc both … and darbības vārds vienmēr ir daudzskaitlī; both nestāv pirms savas daļas: She speaks both French and German.

Vismaz vienā teikumā — both … and, either … or vai neither … nor.

  • lēmums tieši tagad un solījums — ar will, be about to — bez laika norādes?
  • pēc neither … nor nav otra not?
