Keď treba povedať niečo o dvoch veciach naraz, angličtina siahne po dvojici spojok. Takéto dvojice sú tri a významom zodpovedajú slovenským „aj… aj“, „buď… alebo“, „ani… ani“.

Tvar:

both … and aj… aj, obaja Both my brother and my sister live abroad.
either … or buď… alebo, jedno z dvoch We can meet either on Monday or on Tuesday.
neither … nor ani… ani Neither the train nor the bus was running.

Kedy sa používa.

both … and spája: platí jedno aj druhé. Podmet s both … and je vždy v množnom čísle, a sloveso tiež: Both Tom and Anna are coming.

either … or ponúka výber: platí jedno z dvoch. You can either pay now or pay later. Either Mark or Lucy will meet you at the station. Dvojica môže spájať aj dve celé vety — tak znejú podmienky a ultimáta: Either you tell him, or I will. („Buď mu to povieš ty, alebo ja.“) Pred druhou časťou sa vtedy píše čiarka.

neither … nor popiera oboje: neplatí ani jedno, ani druhé. Táto dvojica sama nesie zápor, preto je sloveso za ňou kladné: Neither Tom nor Anna has called. Po slovensky „ani Tom, ani Anna nezavolali“ — zápor zaznie dvakrát, v angličtine raz. To je hlavné pravidlo témy.

S ktorým slovom sa zhoduje sloveso. Po either … or a neither … nor sa sloveso riadi podmetom, ktorý je k nemu najbližšie: Neither my brother nor my parents are at home. Either my parents or my sister is going to pick you up. V hovorenej reči sa po neither … nor často dáva množné číslo aj pre dva podmety v jednotnom čísle — Neither Tom nor Anna have called; v písanom texte je istejšie jednotné.

Kde stoja spojky. Každá spojka stojí priamo pred svojou časťou a časti musia byť rovnakého druhu: dve podstatné mená, dve slovesá, dve príslovkové určenia. She speaks both French and German. — za spojkami sú dva jazyky. We can either take a taxi or walk. — za spojkami sú dva deje. He neither called nor wrote. — nezavolal ani nenapísal.

Porovnaj neither … nor s obyčajným záporom:

I don't like tea or coffee. bežná reč
I like neither tea nor coffee. knižne a dôrazne

Samotné spojky sú neprízvučné; prízvuk padá na to, čo spájajú: „both TOM and ANna“. Pred druhou časťou sa robí krátka pauza, aby bolo výber alebo výpočet počuť.

Ďalšie príklady:

Both the hotel and the restaurant were full. Aj hotel, aj reštaurácia boli plné.
The flat is both cheap and close to the station. Byt je aj lacný, aj blízko stanice.
You can either call or send a message. Môžeš zavolať alebo napísať správu.

Takto sa nehovorí. ✗ Neither the train nor the bus wasn't running → ✓ Neither the train nor the bus was running. Druhý zápor je zbytočný.

Otestuj sa. Ako povedať „ani Tom, ani Anna neprišli“? Aké sloveso treba vo vete Both my sister and my brother ___ (live) in York? Čo nie je v poriadku vo vete She both speaks French and German?

zobraziť odpovede
Neither Tom nor Anna came; live — po both … and je sloveso vždy v množnom čísle; both nestojí pred svojou časťou: She speaks both French and German.
