There is e there are dizem que algo existe num lugar.

There is a table in my room. No meu quarto há uma mesa.
There are two windows in my room. No meu quarto há duas janelas.
Is there a lift in your building? Na sua casa tem elevador?
There isn't a lift. / There aren't two rooms. Não há elevador. / Não há dois cômodos.
Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. Resposta curta.

A escolha entre is e are depende do que vem DEPOIS, e não antes: There is a table, There are two tables.

Erros de quem fala português do Brasil

escrito para o seu idioma
1

have no lugar de there is

✗ In my room have a table

✓ There is a table in my room

2

There is versus It is

There is a table — dizemos que a mesa existe. It is a table — dizemos O QUE é aquele objeto. ✗ It is a table in my room — não é isso.

3

there is com plural

✗ There is two windows → ✓ There are two windows. Numa lista, porém, o inglês olha para o PRIMEIRO item citado: ✗ There are a table and two chairs → ✓ There is a table and two chairs.

4

Um “em” para in e on

✗ My books are in my table

✓ My books are on my table

3 min

Na fala corrente a construção se contrai: there is → there's /ðeəz/. There are não se contrai por inteiro, mas o are soa fraco — /ə/.
