is 확실히 안다 He is at home — I can see him.
He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could 그럴 수도 있다 He might be at the gym.
may not / might not 아닐 수도 있다 He might not be at home.
He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
He isn't here.

She must be tired, He might know. He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must는 '나는 그렇게 판단한다'는 뜻이고, 듣는 사람은 그것이 사실이 아니라 결론이라는 것을 알아듣습니다.

It could be a virus.

That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

부정은 mustn't가 아니라 can't. mustn't는 금지입니다(A2 10과): You mustn't park here. She might not know about the meeting.

Could it be a mistake? Who can that be?

You must be tired.
You must go to bed.

Maybe he's at home. may be는 두 단어, 조동사와 be이고, 주어 뒤에 옵니다: He may be at home.

That must be the postman.
She might be in a meeting.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor.
You could be right.

✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill.

He must be at home일까요, He might be at home일까요? Maybe she's ill과 She may be ill은 무엇이 다릅니까?

He must be at home — 증거가 들어맞습니다; That can't be true (또는 It can't be true); 뜻은 다르지 않습니다: 앞의 것의 maybe는 부사이고, 뒤의 것의 may be는 조동사와 be입니다.

1

추측의 부정에 mustn't

'~임에 틀림없다'를 must로 외워 두면, '집에 없는 게 틀림없다'는 ✗ He mustn't be at home이 되기 쉽습니다. '집에 있을 리가 없다'는 ✓ He can't be at home. He must not be home이 추측으로도 쓰이지만, 영국 영어에서는 can't로 부정합니다.

2

✗ He can be at the gym now

✓ He might be at the gym now / He could be at the gym now

이럴 때는 may, might, could입니다.

3

✗ She must tired → ✓ She must be tired; ✗ He maybe at home → ✓ He may be at home / Maybe he's at home.

He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: /s/와 /b/ 사이의 /t/는 사라집니다. must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/도 마찬가지입니다.

자음 앞에서 끝의 /t/는 거의 들리지 않으므로, 그때 can't와 can을 구별하는 것은 긴 /ɑː/와 강세뿐입니다(A1 20과). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/는 터지지 않고 모음을 끊기만 합니다 — 한국어의 받침처럼.

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!
