be able to — 어느 시제에서나 쓰는 능력. can의 형태는 can과 could 둘뿐입니다.
I'll be able to swim by the summer. |
I haven't been able to sleep this week. |
I'd like to be able to speak French. |
You might be able to get a ticket online. |
I wasn't able to come yesterday. |
현재에는 보통 can을 씁니다: I can swim이 I'm able to swim보다 자연스럽게 들립니다.
I could read when I was four. 구체적인 한 번의 성공은 was able to나 managed to입니다. managed to는 힘들었지만 해냈다는 것을 강조합니다.
| I could swim when I was six. | |
| The water was cold, but I managed to swim to the boat. |
I couldn't find my keys this morning. I could hear music next door.
긍정문에서 was able to와 managed to는 거의 같지만, managed to는 어려움과 노력을 직접 말합니다. 그래서 but이나 in the end와 함께 쓰이는 일이 그렇게 많습니다: It took three hours, but in the end we managed to fix it. I finished the report on Friday.
You're supposed to take your shoes off in the house. I'm supposed to be at work at nine. I'm supposed to be working, but I'm watching football. The train was supposed to arrive at six. You're not supposed to park here. I'm supposed to, Were we supposed to…?
have to와 비교해 보십시오. I have to be at work at nine — 나에게는 선택이 없습니다: 늦으면 곤란해집니다. I'm supposed to be at work at nine — 그것이 규칙이지만, 어길 수도 있고 어쩌면 내가 어길지도 모른다는 느낌이 듭니다.
be allowed to — 해도 된다, 허락되어 있다.
We're allowed to use dictionaries in the exam. |
You aren't allowed to smoke on the train. |
Are we allowed to take photos? |
I wasn't allowed to stay out late as a child. |
Next year students will be allowed to use phones in class. |
can일까요, be allowed to일까요? You can park here after six. be allowed to는 허락이 규칙이나 다른 사람에게서 온다는 것을 강조하므로, 규칙을 알리거나 물어볼 때 더 정확하게 들립니다: Are we allowed to bring food into the museum? 미래와 완료에는 can의 형태가 없으므로 be allowed to가 꼭 필요합니다 — be able to와 마찬가지입니다: Will we be allowed to park here? 과거의 경계는 could와 managed to의 경계와 같습니다: could — 일반적인, 오랜 기간에 걸친 허락(As a child I could watch TV until nine), was allowed to — 한 번의 허락(Yesterday we were allowed to leave early).
supposed to일까요, allowed to일까요?
| You're supposed to wear a helmet. |
| You're allowed to bring one bag. |
| You're not supposed to park here.
| You're not allowed to park here.
don't need to — 할 필요가 없다. don't have to(A2 10과)와 같습니다: 하지 않아도 됩니다. You don't need to come tomorrow. Does she need to bring anything? We didn't need to wait. '안 된다'를 뜻하는 mustn't, not allowed to와 헷갈리지 마십시오: You don't need to come — 안 와도 된다; You aren't allowed to come — 오는 것이 금지되어 있다.
| I must finish today. |
| I have to finish today. |
| I'm supposed to finish today. | |
| I should finish today. |
| I'm allowed to finish tomorrow. |
| I don't need to finish today. |
| I mustn't forget the figures. |
✗ We didn't need come so early → ✓ We didn't need to come so early. didn't need의 need는 보통의 동사이고, 그 뒤에는 to가 필요합니다.
The film was supposed to start at eight는 무슨 뜻입니까?

✗ I will can swim
✓ I'll be able to swim
두 번째 자리에는 be able to가 들어갑니다.
한 번의 성공에 could
✗ The exam was hard, but I could pass it
✓ The exam was hard, but I managed to pass it / I was able to pass it
supposed to, allowed to 앞의 be가 빠짐
✗ I supposed to be there at nine
✓ I'm supposed to be there at nine
I'm supposed to, We aren't allowed to.
✗ It isn't allowed to smoke here
✓ You aren't allowed to smoke here
하지만 be allowed to의 주어는 허락을 받거나 받지 못하는 사람입니다: You aren't allowed, Passengers aren't allowed.
4분supposed to — /səˈpəʊs tə/: -d와 t가 합쳐져 /t/ 하나가 됩니다.
able — /ˈeɪbl/, table에서처럼 강세 있는 /eɪ/입니다. be able to는 한 덩어리로 한숨에 말합니다: /bi ˈeɪbl tə/; to는 약한 /tə/입니다.
managed to — /ˈmænɪdʒ tə/: /t/ 앞의 /d/는 거의 사라집니다. allowed to /əˈlaʊd tə/에서도 supposed to처럼 /d/와 /t/가 합쳐집니다. allowed는 앞에 약한 /ə/가 붙은 loud처럼 소리 나고 — aloud '소리 내어'와 똑같이 들립니다.
본문
5분Hi Claire,
I'm afraid the report isn't ready yet. I was supposed to send it to you yesterday, but I wasn't able to finish it. At four o'clock my laptop suddenly stopped working, and nobody in IT could fix it the same day.
The good news is that I managed to save most of the file — I only lost the last two pages. Sam has lent me his old laptop, and I'm allowed to keep it until Friday, so I'll be able to finish everything this morning. You'll have it by twelve.
You don't need to move the meeting with the client. The figures are all correct — I checked them twice on Monday. But I'm supposed to show the report to Mark first, and he's working from home today. Do you need to see it too, or can I send it straight to him?
One more thing: we're not supposed to leave laptops in the office overnight, but mine stayed there because it wasn't working. I hope that's all right.
Sorry again, Ben

예시
Yesterday I was supposed to meet a client at ten, but I wasn't able to get there on time. There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic didn't move for an hour. I managed to call the client from the car, and she was very kind about it. In the end we had the meeting online. So now I don't need to drive to her office next week. I hope I'll be able to meet her in person next month.
