Šos darbības vārdus jūs zināt citās nozīmēs: must — pienākums (A2 #10), can — prasme (A1 #20), could — pieklājīgs lūgums (A2 #17).

is zinu droši He is at home — I can see him.
must gandrīz droši, ka jā He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could varbūt jā He might be at the gym.
may not / might not varbūt nē He might not be at home.
can't gandrīz droši, ka nē He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
isn't zinu droši, ka nē He isn't here.

Forma. Pēc modālā darbības vārda — pamatforma bez to, un pašam modālajam nav -s: She must be tired, He might know. Ja minējums ir par to, kas notiek tieši tagad, — be + -ing: He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

Kā izvēlēties.

must — secinājums no pierādījumiem: es saliku faktus kopā, un cita izskaidrojuma neredzu. Pierādījumu parasti nosauc blakus: You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. Bet must nenozīmē „noteikti”. Ja jūs zināt droši, modālais darbības vārds nav vajadzīgs: He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must saka „es tā secinu”, un sarunbiedrs dzird, ka tas ir secinājums, nevis fakts. Latviski šo lomu spēlē „droši vien”, „laikam” vai „jā-” forma („viņam jābūt mājās”); angļu valodā — pats darbības vārds.

may, might, could — viena no versijām, un es nezinu, vai tā ir pareiza. Starp tiem gandrīz nav atšķirības: might — mazliet nedrošāk, may — mazliet oficiālāk, could nozīmē „pilnīgi iespējams”: It could be a virus.

can't — secinājums „nē”: fakti padara versiju neiespējamu. That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

Noliegums — can't, nevis mustn't. mustn't ir aizliegums (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. „Droši vien nē” britu angļu valodā izsaka ar can't. Bet might not ir maigs „varbūt nē”: She might not know about the meeting.

Jautājums. Jautājumā par minējumu ņem could vai can: Could it be a mistake? — „Vai tā varētu būt kļūda?” Who can that be? — „Kas tas varētu būt?” Ar must un might tādus jautājumus gandrīz neveido.

must — minējums vai pienākums? Skatieties uz darbības vārdu pēc tā. Ar be, know, ar have nozīmē „piederēt” un ar ilgstošo formu must gandrīz vienmēr ir minējums. Ar darbību — pienākums:

You must be tired. Tu droši vien esi noguris. — minējums
You must go to bed. Tev jāiet gulēt. — pienākums

maybe un may be. maybe ir viens vārds, apstākļa vārds, parasti stāv sākumā: Maybe he's at home. may be ir divi vārdi, modālais darbības vārds un be, stāv pēc teikuma priekšmeta: He may be at home. Nozīme ir viena, bet raksta atšķirīgi — tāpat kā latviešu „varbūt” un „var būt”.

Vēl piemēri:

That must be the postman. Tas droši vien ir pastnieks.
She might be in a meeting. Varbūt viņa ir sanāksmē.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve. Tas nevar būt mūsu autobuss.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor. Viņš noteikti zina atbildi.
You could be right. Iespējams, jums taisnība.

Tā nesaka. ✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill. Modālais darbības vārds nemainās pa personām, -s tam nekad nav.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Kaimiņa mašīna ir pie mājas, logos deg gaisma. Ko teiksiet: He must be at home vai He might be at home? Kā pateikt „tā nevar būt taisnība”? Ar ko atšķiras Maybe she's ill no She may be ill?

rādīt atbildes
He must be at home — pierādījumi sakrīt; That can't be true (vai It can't be true); pēc nozīmes ne ar ko: pirmajā maybe ir apstākļa vārds, otrajā may be — modālais darbības vārds ar be.

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas

pielāgots tavai valodai
1

mustn't minējumā

He mustn't be at home brits sapratīs kā aizliegumu: „viņam nedrīkst būt mājās”. Lai pateiktu „droši vien nav mājās”, vajag ✓ He can't be at home. Latviešu „viņam jābūt mājās” labi sakrīt ar must, un noliegumu gribas veidot no tā paša vārda. Bet mustn't ir tikai aizliegums. Te palīdz latviešu „nevar būt”: „tas nevar būt” — That can't be.

2

to pēc modālā

✗ She must to be tired

✓ She must be tired

Latviešu nenoteiksme ir viens vārds („var būt”, „var zināt”), bet blakus dzīvo have to, need to, want to, un to pēc ieraduma ielavās arī pēc must, might, can't. Pēc īstajiem modālajiem darbības vārdiem to nav.

3

Bez be + -ing minējumā par tagadni

He must work late nozīmē pienākumu: „viņam jāstrādā ilgi”. Minējumam par to, kas notiek tagad, vajag ✓ He must be working late. Latviešu „viņš laikam strādā” procesam atsevišķas formas nav, tāpēc be + -ing paliek ārpusē. Bet bez tā must ar darbību skan kā pienākums.

4

must par nākotni

He must come tomorrow — tā runā par pienākumu: „viņam rīt jānāk”. Minējumam par nākotni — ✓ He'll probably come tomorrow vai He might come tomorrow. Latviešu „jā-” forma minējumā der jebkuram laikam („rīt viņam jābūt mājās”), bet minējums ar must gandrīz vienmēr ir par tagadni.

Izruna

4 min

Uzsvars — uz modālo darbības vārdu: tas nes minējuma nozīmi. He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill. be pēc tā ir neuzsvērts un īss — /bi/.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: /t/ starp /s/ un /b/ izkrīt. Tāpat must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

can't minējumā ir pilns un garš — /kɑːnt/. Beigu /t/ pirms līdzskaņa gandrīz pazūd, un tad can't no can atšķir tikai garais /ɑː/ un uzsvars (A1 #20). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/ neeksplodē, tikai pārtrauc patskani.

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!
