Bu fiilleri başka anlamlarıyla biliyorsunuz: must — zorunluluk (A2 #10), can — beceri (A1 #20), could — kibar rica (A2 #17).

is kesin biliyorum He is at home — I can see him.
must neredeyse eminim: evet He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could belki evet He might be at the gym.
may not / might not belki hayır He might not be at home.
can't neredeyse eminim: hayır He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
isn't kesin biliyorum: hayır He isn't here.

Yapı. Modal fiilden sonra to'suz yalın hâl gelir, modal fiilin kendisi de -s almaz: She must be tired, He might know. Tahmin tam şu anda olan bir şeyle ilgiliyse — be + -ing: He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

Nasıl seçilir.

must — kanıtlardan çıkarılan sonuç: olguları topladım ve başka bir açıklama göremiyorum. Kanıt genellikle hemen yanında söylenir: You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. Ama must “kesin” demek değildir. Kesin biliyorsanız modal fiile gerek yok: He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must “ben böyle sonuç çıkarıyorum” der ve karşınızdaki bunun bir olgu değil, bir çıkarım olduğunu duyar. Türkçede bu işi “-meli” (“evde olmalı”), “-dir” eki (“evdedir”) ya da “herhalde”, “kesin” gibi kelimeler görür; İngilizcede fiilin kendisi.

may, might, could — olasılıklardan biri, ve doğru olup olmadığını bilmiyorum. Aralarında neredeyse fark yok: might biraz daha az emin, may biraz daha resmî, could “gayet olabilir” demektir: It could be a virus.

can't — “hayır” sonucu: olgular bu olasılığı imkânsız kılıyor. That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

Olumsuzu can't, mustn't değil. mustn't yasaktır (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. İngiliz İngilizcesinde “büyük ihtimalle hayır” için can't denir. might not ise yumuşak bir “belki de değil”dir: She might not know about the meeting.

Soru. Tahmin sorusunda could ya da can kullanılır: Could it be a mistake? — “Hata olabilir mi?” Who can that be? — “Bu kim olabilir?” must ve might ile böyle sorular neredeyse hiç kurulmaz.

must — tahmin mi, zorunluluk mu? Ondan sonraki fiile bakın. be, know, “sahip olmak” anlamındaki have ve sürekli biçimle must hemen her zaman tahmindir. Bir eylemle zorunluluktur — Türkçedeki “-meli” gibi:

You must be tired. Yorgun olmalısın. — tahmin
You must go to bed. Yatman gerek. — zorunluluk

maybe ve may be. maybe tek kelimedir, zarftır ve genellikle başta durur: Maybe he's at home. may be iki kelimedir, modal fiil ve be, özneden sonra gelir: He may be at home. Anlam aynı, ama yazılışları farklı.

Başka örnekler:

That must be the postman. Bu postacı olmalı.
She might be in a meeting. Belki toplantıdadır.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve. Bu bizim otobüsümüz olamaz.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor. Cevabı kesin biliyordur.
You could be right. Haklı olabilirsiniz.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill. Modal fiil kişiye göre değişmez, -s almaz.

Kendinizi sınayın. Komşunun arabası evin önünde, pencerelerde ışık var. Ne dersiniz: He must be at home mı, He might be at home mı? “Bu doğru olamaz” nasıl söylenir? Maybe she's ill ile She may be ill arasındaki fark ne?

cevapları göster
He must be at home — kanıtlar örtüşüyor; That can't be true (ya da It can't be true); anlamca hiçbir fark yok: birincisinde maybe zarftır, ikincisinde may be — be ile birlikte modal fiil.

Türkçe konuşanların hataları

diliniz için yazıldı
1

“Olmamalı” = mustn't be

He mustn't be at home bir İngiliz'e yasak gibi gelir: “evde olmaması gerekiyor”. “Büyük ihtimalle evde değil” için ✓ He can't be at home. Türkçede tahmin bildiren “-meli” olumsuzda “-memeli” olur (“evde olmamalı, ışıklar kapalı”), bu da mustn't'ı çağırır. Ama mustn't yalnızca yasaktır. “Olamaz” ise can't'e birebir uyar: “Bu doğru olamaz” — That can't be true.

2

Fiilsiz maybe

✗ He maybe at home

✓ He may be at home / Maybe he's at home

“O belki evde” cümlesinde fiil yoktur; “belki” yerine maybe konunca İngilizce cümle de fiilsiz kalır. İngilizcede fiil şarttır: ya iki kelimelik may be, ya da Maybe + he's.

3

Modal fiilden sonra to

✗ She must to be tired

✓ She must be tired

have to, need to alışkanlığıyla to must, might, can't'ten sonra da konur. Ama gerçek modal fiillerden sonra to olmaz (A2 #10).

4

Gelecek için must

He must come tomorrow zorunluluk bildirir: “yarın gelmek zorunda”. Türkçede “yarın gelmeli” bir beklenti de olabilir, bu yüzden tahmin must'la kurulur. Gelecekle ilgili tahmin için ✓ He'll probably come tomorrow ya da He might come tomorrow; must'lı tahmin hemen her zaman şimdiyle ilgilidir.

Telaffuz

4 dk

Vurgu modal fiilde: tahminin anlamını o taşır. He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill. Ondan sonraki be vurgusuz ve kısadır — /bi/.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: /s/ ile /b/ arasındaki /t/ düşer. must know da öyle: /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

Tahmindeki can't tam ve uzundur — /kɑːnt/. Ünsüzden önce sondaki /t/ neredeyse kaybolur, o zaman can't'i can'den yalnızca uzun /ɑː/ ve vurgu ayırır (A1 #20). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/ patlamaz, yalnızca ünlüyü keser.

Metin

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!
