Aquests verbs ja els coneixes amb altres sentits: must, l'obligació (A2 #10); can, l'habilitat (A1 #20); could, la petició educada (A2 #17).

fins a quin punt n'estic segur exemple
is ho sé del cert He is at home — I can see him.
must gairebé segur que sí He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could potser sí He might be at the gym.
may not / might not potser no He might not be at home.
can't gairebé segur que no He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
isn't sé del cert que no He isn't here.

La forma. Darrere del verb modal ve la forma bàsica sense to, i el modal mateix no porta -s: She must be tired, He might know. He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

Com triar.

must és una conclusió a partir de proves: he sumat els fets i no hi veig cap altra explicació. La prova se sol dir al costat: You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. Però must no vol dir «segur». Si ho saps del cert, el verb modal no cal: He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must diu «en dedueixo que…», i qui t'escolta entén que és una conclusió, no un fet.

may, might, could: una de les explicacions possibles, i no sé si és la bona. Entre elles gairebé no hi ha diferència: might és una mica menys segur, may una mica més formal, i could vol dir «ben bé podria ser»: It could be a virus.

That can't be Tom — he's in France this week.

La negació és can't, no mustn't. mustn't és una prohibició (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. Per a «segur que no», l'anglès britànic diu can't. I might not és un «potser no» suau: She might not know about the meeting.

La pregunta. A la pregunta sobre una suposició es fa servir could o can: Could it be a mistake? — «Pot ser que sigui un error?» Who can that be? — «Qui deu ser?» Amb must i might aquestes preguntes gairebé no es fan.

must: suposició o obligació? Mira el verb que ve darrere. Amb be, know, have en el sentit de «tenir» i amb la forma contínua, must és gairebé sempre una suposició. Amb una acció, una obligació:

You must be tired. Deus estar cansat. — suposició
You must go to bed. Has d'anar a dormir. — obligació

maybe i may be. maybe és una sola paraula, un adverbi, i sol anar al començament: Maybe he's at home. may be són dues paraules, el verb modal i be, i va darrere del subjecte: He may be at home.

That must be the postman. Deu ser el carter.
She might be in a meeting. Potser és en una reunió.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve. No pot ser el nostre autobús.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor. Segur que sap la resposta.
You could be right. Potser tens raó.

Així no es diu. ✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill.

Posa't a prova. Què dius: He must be at home o He might be at home? Quina diferència hi ha entre Maybe she's ill i She may be ill?

mostra les respostes
He must be at home — les proves coincideixen; That can't be true (o It can't be true); pel sentit, cap: a la primera, maybe és un adverbi; a la segona, may be és el verb modal amb be.

Errors dels parlants de català

adaptada al teu idioma
1

«No deu ser» → mustn't

«No deu ser a casa» → ✗ He mustn't be at home → ✓ He can't be at home. La suposició «no» és can't.

2

«Pot ser» → can

«Pot ser un virus» → ✗ It can be a virus → ✓ It could be a virus / It might be a virus. «Poder» porta a can. Però per a una suposició sobre un cas concret, l'afirmació fa servir could, might o may; It can be… sona a «de vegades passa».

3

«Ha d'estar» amb to

✗ She must to be tired

✓ She must be tired

«Ha d'estar cansada»: aquesta «de» sembla demanar un to, i al costat hi ha have to i need to. Però darrere de must, might i can't no hi va res.

Pronunciació

4 min

He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill. be, darrere, és àton i curt: /bi/.

must be és /ˈmʌs bi/: la /t/ entre /s/ i /b/ cau. Igual a must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

can't a la suposició és sencer i llarg: /kɑːnt/. La /t/ final davant de consonant gairebé desapareix, i llavors can't es distingeix de can només per la /ɑː/ llarga i per l'accent (A1 #20). might be és /ˈmaɪt bi/: la /t/ no explota, només talla la vocal.

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!

This bag on the table must be his — it's the same colour as his old one. He could be cooking: I can smell onions. Or he might be waiting to surprise me.
