Aceste verbe le știi cu alte sensuri: must — obligația (A2 #10), can — abilitatea (A1 #20), could — rugămintea politicoasă (A2 #17).

is știu sigur He is at home — I can see him.
must aproape sigur că da He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could poate că da He might be at the gym.
may not / might not poate că nu He might not be at home.
can't aproape sigur că nu He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
isn't știu sigur că nu He isn't here.

Forma. După verbul modal — forma de bază fără to, iar verbul modal nu primește -s: She must be tired, He might know. Dacă presupunerea e despre ce se întâmplă chiar acum — be + -ing: He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

Indiciul se spune de obicei alături: You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. Dar must nu înseamnă „sigur”. Dacă știi precis, verbul modal nu trebuie: He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must spune „așa deduc eu”, iar interlocutorul aude că e o concluzie, nu un fapt.

may, might, could — una dintre variante, și nu știu dacă e cea adevărată. Între ele aproape nu e diferență: might e puțin mai nesigur, may puțin mai oficial, could înseamnă „se poate foarte bine”: It could be a virus.

can't — concluzia „nu”: faptele fac varianta imposibilă. That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

Negația — can't, nu mustn't. mustn't e o interdicție (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. Iar might not e un „poate că nu” blând: She might not know about the meeting.

Întrebarea. În întrebarea de presupunere se folosește could sau can: Could it be a mistake? — „Să fie o greșeală?” Who can that be? — „Cine o fi?” Cu must și might asemenea întrebări aproape că nu se construiesc.

must — presupunere sau obligație? Uită-te la verbul de după el. Cu be, know, have cu sensul „a avea” și cu forma continuă must e aproape întotdeauna presupunere. Cu o acțiune — obligație:

You must be tired. Trebuie să fii obosit. — presupunere
You must go to bed. Trebuie să te culci. — obligație

maybe și may be. maybe — un singur cuvânt, adverb, stă de obicei la început: Maybe he's at home. may be — două cuvinte, verbul modal și be, stă după subiect: He may be at home. Sensul e același, dar se scriu diferit.

Încă exemple:

That must be the postman. Trebuie să fie poștașul.
She might be in a meeting. Poate e într-o ședință.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve. Ăsta nu poate fi autobuzul nostru.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor. Sigur știe răspunsul.
You could be right. S-ar putea să ai dreptate.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill.

Ce spui: He must be at home sau He might be at home? Cum spui „asta nu poate fi adevărat”? Prin ce se deosebește Maybe she's ill de She may be ill?

arată răspunsurile
He must be at home — indiciile se potrivesc; That can't be true (sau It can't be true); ca sens prin nimic: în prima maybe e adverb, în a doua may be e verbul modal cu be.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

„Poate” tradus prin can

„Nu răspunde, poate fi într-o ședință” → She can be in a meeting sună ca „i se întâmplă să fie în ședințe”. Pentru presupunerea despre acum trebuie ✓ She might be in a meeting / She could be in a meeting. „A putea” duce în română și abilitatea, și presupunerea; can afirmativ spune ce e posibil în general, nu ce se întâmplă acum.

2

maybe și may be

„Poate e acasă” → ✗ May be he's at home → ✓ Maybe he's at home; „poate fi acasă” → ✗ He maybe at home → ✓ He may be at home.

3

to după verbul modal

„Trebuie să fie obosită” → ✗ She must to be tired → ✓ She must be tired. „Să” de după „trebuie”, „poate” cere parcă un to, mai ales că alături trăiesc have to, need to, want to. Dar după verbele modale adevărate to nu stă.

4

Forma simplă pentru ce se întâmplă acum

„E lumină în birou — trebuie să lucreze până târziu” → He must work late înseamnă „e obligat să lucreze până târziu”. Pentru presupunere — ✓ He must be working late. Româna n-are formă continuă; după must tocmai -ing desparte presupunerea de obligație.

5

must despre viitor

„Trebuie să vină mâine” → He must come tomorrow — așa se vorbește despre obligație: „e obligat să vină”. Pentru presupunerea despre viitor — ✓ He'll probably come tomorrow sau He might come tomorrow. Presupunerea cu must e aproape întotdeauna despre prezent.

Pronunție

4 min

Accentul cade pe verbul modal: el poartă sensul presupunerii. He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill. be de după el e neaccentuat și scurt — /bi/.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: /t/ dintre /s/ și /b/ dispare. La fel must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

can't în presupunere e întreg și lung — /kɑːnt/. /t/ final înaintea unei consoane aproape dispare, și atunci can't se deosebește de can doar prin /ɑː/ lung și prin accent (A1 #20). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/ nu explodează, ci doar retează vocala.

Text

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!

The door is open, and there's music in the kitchen. Someone must be at home. It can't be my flatmate — she's in Paris this week. It might be my brother; he has a key. This bag on the table must be his — it's the same colour as his old one. He could be cooking: I can smell onions. Or he might be waiting to surprise me.
