Šiuos veiksmažodžius pažįstate iš kitų reikšmių: must — pareiga (A2 #10), can — gebėjimas (A1 #20), could — mandagus prašymas (A2 #17). Jie turi ir antrą reikšmę: parodo, kiek kalbantysis tikras savo spėjimu. Šviesa lange, automobilis prie namo, žmogus neatsiliepia telefonu — ir mes darome išvadą.

Tikrumo skalė:

kiek tikras pavyzdys
is žinau tikrai He is at home — I can see him.
must beveik tikras, kad taip He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could galbūt taip He might be at the gym.
may not / might not galbūt ne He might not be at home.
can't beveik tikras, kad ne He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
isn't žinau tikrai, kad ne He isn't here.

Forma. Po modalinio veiksmažodžio — pradinė forma be to, o pats modalinis neturi -s: She must be tired, He might know. Jei spėjama apie tai, kas vyksta būtent dabar, — be + -ing: He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

Kaip pasirinkti.

must — išvada iš įrodymų: sudėjau faktus ir kito paaiškinimo nematau. Įrodymas paprastai įvardijamas šalia: You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. Bet must nereiškia „tikrai“. Jei žinote tiksliai, modalinio veiksmažodžio nereikia: He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must sako „aš taip darau išvadą“, ir pašnekovas girdi, kad tai išvada, o ne faktas. Lietuviškai šį darbą atlieka įterpiniai „turbūt“, „tikriausiai“, „greičiausiai“; angliškai — pats veiksmažodis.

may, might, could — viena iš versijų, ir nežinau, ar ji teisinga. Skirtumo tarp jų beveik nėra: might šiek tiek mažiau užtikrintas, may šiek tiek oficialesnis, could reiškia „visai gali būti“: It could be a virus.

can't — išvada „ne“: faktai daro versiją neįmanomą. That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

Neigimas — can't, o ne mustn't. mustn't — draudimas (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. „Beveik tikrai ne“ britų anglų kalboje sakoma can't. O might not — švelnus „galbūt ne“: She might not know about the meeting.

Klausimas. Spėjimo klausime vartojama could arba can: Could it be a mistake? — „Gal tai klaida?“ Who can that be? — „Kas tai galėtų būti?“ Su must ir might tokių klausimų beveik nesudaro.

must — spėjimas ar pareiga? Žiūrėkite į veiksmažodį po jo. Su be, know, have reikšme „turėti“ ir su tęstine forma must beveik visada reiškia spėjimą. Su veiksmu — pareigą:

You must be tired. Tu turbūt pavargai. — spėjimas
You must go to bed. Tau reikia eiti miegoti. — pareiga

maybe ir may be. maybe — vienas žodis, prieveiksmis, paprastai stovi pradžioje: Maybe he's at home. may be — du žodžiai, modalinis veiksmažodis ir be, stovi po veiksnio: He may be at home. Prasmė ta pati, o rašoma skirtingai — kaip lietuviški „galbūt“ ir „gali būti“.

Dar pavyzdžių:

That must be the postman. Tai turbūt laiškanešys.
She might be in a meeting. Galbūt ji pasitarime.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve. Tai negali būti mūsų autobusas.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor. Jis tikriausiai žino atsakymą.
You could be right. Galbūt jūs teisus.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill. Modalinis veiksmažodis nekaitomas pagal asmenis, -s jis neturi.

Pasitikrinkite. Kaimyno automobilis prie namo, languose šviesa. Ką pasakysite: He must be at home ar He might be at home? Kaip pasakyti „tai negali būti tiesa“? Kuo skiriasi Maybe she's ill nuo She may be ill?

rodyti atsakymus
He must be at home — įrodymai sutampa; That can't be true (arba It can't be true); prasme niekuo: pirmajame maybe — prieveiksmis, antrajame may be — modalinis veiksmažodis su be.

Lietuvių kalbos gimtakalbių klaidos

parašyta jūsų kalbai
1

mustn't spėjime

He mustn't be at home britas supras kaip draudimą: „jam negalima būti namie“. „Tikriausiai ne namie“ — ✓ He can't be at home. Lietuviškas „turi būti“ tinka ir pareigai, ir spėjimui („jis turi būti namie — automobilis kieme“), todėl neigimą norisi sudaryti iš must ir not. O angliškas mustn't reiškia tik draudimą. Atrama — lietuviškas „negali būti“: „tai negali būti tiesa“ — That can't be true. Amerikiečių anglų kalboje He must not be home pasitaiko ir kaip spėjimas, bet britų — spėjimą neigia per can't.

2

maybe ir may be supainioti

✗ May be he's at home → ✓ Maybe he's at home; ✗ He maybe at home → ✓ He may be at home.

3

to po modalinio

✗ She must to be tired

✓ She must be tired

Lietuviška bendratis („turi būti“, „gali žinoti“) verčiama su to, o šalia gyvena have to, need to, want to. Bet po tikrųjų modalinių veiksmažodžių to nebūna.

4

must apie ateitį

He must come tomorrow — taip sakoma apie pareigą: „jis privalo ateiti“. Spėjimui apie ateitį — ✓ He'll probably come tomorrow arba He might come tomorrow. Lietuviškas „turbūt ateis“ pasufleruoja must, bet spėjimas su must beveik visada — apie dabartį.

Tarimas

4 min

Kirtis — ant modalinio veiksmažodžio: jis neša spėjimo prasmę. He MUST be at home, That CAN'T be right, She MIGHT be ill. be po jo nekirčiuotas ir trumpas — /bi/.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: /t/ tarp /s/ ir /b/ iškrinta. Taip pat must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

can't spėjime pilnas ir ilgas — /kɑːnt/. Galinis /t/ prieš priebalsį beveik dingsta, ir tada can't nuo can skiria tik ilgasis /ɑː/ ir kirtis (A1 #20). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/ nesprogsta, o tik nutraukia balsį.

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!

This bag on the table must be his — it's the same colour as his old one. He could be cooking: I can smell onions. Or he might be waiting to surprise me.
