He is at home — I can see him.
He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could そうかもしれない:「〜かもしれない」 He might be at the gym.
may not / might not He might not be at home.
He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
He isn't here.

She must be tired、He might know。 He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must

It could be a virus.

That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

mustn't は禁止です(A2の第10課):You mustn't park here。 She might not know about the meeting.

Could it be a mistake? Who can that be?

You must be tired.
You must go to bed.

maybe と may be。 Maybe he's at home. may be は2語、助動詞と be で、主語のあとに置きます:He may be at home.

That must be the postman.
She might be in a meeting.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor.
You could be right.

✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill。

He must be at home と He might be at home Maybe she's ill と She may be ill はどう違いますか。

He must be at home — 証拠がそろっている; That can't be true(または It can't be true); 意味は同じ:1つ目の maybe は副詞、2つ目の may be は助動詞 + be.

must =「〜にちがいない」と覚えていると、その否定は must + not に見えます。でも He mustn't be at home は、イギリス人には「家にいてはいけない」という禁止に聞こえます。「家にいるはずがない」は ✓ He can't be at home です。アメリカ英語では must not を推測に使うこともありますが、イギリス英語では推測の否定は can't です。

2

Maybe he's at home は He might be at home 証拠があってほぼ確信しているなら ✓ He must be at home と言いましょう。

3

He must come tomorrow 「明日きっと来るだろう」は ✓ He'll probably come tomorrow か He might come tomorrow。

He MUST be at home、That CAN'T be right、She MIGHT be ill。

must be は /ˈmʌs bi/: /s/ と /b/ のあいだの /t/ は落ちます。 must know も同じで /ˈmʌs nəʊ/ です。

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!

The door is open, and there's music in the kitchen. Someone must be at home. It can't be my flatmate — she's in Paris this week. It might be my brother; he has a key. This bag on the table must be his — it's the same colour as his old one. He could be cooking: I can smell onions. Or he might be waiting to surprise me.
