He is at home — I can see him.
He must be at home — his car is outside.
may / might / could ربما نعم He might be at the gym.
may not / might not ربما لا He might not be at home.
He can't be at work — it's Sunday.
He isn't here.

بعد الفعل المساعد يأتي الفعل في صيغته الأصلية بلا to، والفعل المساعد نفسه بلا -s: She must be tired، He might know. وإذا كان التخمين عمّا يجري الآن بالذات — فـbe + -ing: He must be working late — the light's on in his office. They might be waiting for us outside.

You must be hungry — you haven't eaten all day. He's at home — I've just spoken to him. must

may وmight وcould — رواية من الروايات، ولا أعرف أهي صحيحة. It could be a virus.

That can't be Tom — he's in Spain this week.

النفي — can't لا mustn't. mustn't منع (A2 #10): You mustn't park here. She might not know about the meeting.

في سؤال التخمين تُستعمل could أو can: Could it be a mistake? Who can that be?

مع be وknow وhave بمعنى «يملك» ومع الصيغة المستمرة تكون must تخميناً في أغلب الأحوال.

You must be tired.
You must go to bed.

Maybe he's at home. وmay be كلمتان، الفعل المساعد وbe، تقفان بعد الفاعل: He may be at home.

That must be the postman.
She might be in a meeting.
This can't be our bus — ours is number twelve.
He must know the answer — he's a doctor.
You could be right.

✗ He mights be ill → ✓ He might be ill.

He must be at home أم He might be at home؟ ما الفرق بين Maybe she's ill وShe may be ill؟

He must be at home — القرائن متّفقة; That can't be true (أو It can't be true); لا فرق في المعنى: في الأولى maybe ظرف، وفي الثانية may be فعل مساعد مع be.

✗ He must at home

✓ He must be at home

أما في الإنجليزية فبعد must وmight وcan't يلزم فعل، ومع المكان والصفة هو be — في صيغته الأصلية، لا is.

2

maybe مكان may be

✗ He maybe at home

✓ He may be at home / Maybe he's at home

لكن maybe ظرف: إما Maybe في أول الجملة ومعها he's، وإما may be كلمتين بعد الفاعل. والعكس خطأ أيضاً: ✗ May be he's at home.

3

✗ She must to be tired

✓ She must be tired

لكن بعد must وmight وcan't يأتي الفعل مباشرة.

4

✗ He mustn't be at home

✓ He can't be at home

He MUST be at home، That CAN'T be right، She MIGHT be ill.

must be — /ˈmʌs bi/: تسقط /t/ بين /s/ و/b/. وكذلك must know /ˈmʌs nəʊ/.

(A1 #20). might be — /ˈmaɪt bi/: /t/ لا تنفجر، بل تقطع الصائت فقط.

النص

Have you seen Tom this morning?

No, but he must be somewhere in the building. His coat's on his chair, and his computer is on.

And his coffee is still warm. He can't be far away.

He might be in the meeting room. The managers meet there on Thursdays.

It can't be the managers' meeting. That always starts at ten, and it's only half past nine.

Then he could be at the coffee machine. Or he may be down in IT — his laptop stopped working yesterday.

Wait, his phone's here too. He never goes anywhere without his phone. He must be very close.

Listen. Can you hear that? Somebody's singing in the kitchen.

That can't be Tom. He hates singing.

Hang on — isn't it his birthday today? Maybe they're singing to him.

Of course! That must be why there's a cake on the kitchen table. They must be waiting for us. Come on!

The door is open, and there's music in the kitchen. Someone must be at home. It can't be my flatmate — she's in Paris this week. It might be my brother; he has a key. This bag on the table must be his — it's the same colour as his old one. He could be cooking: I can smell onions. Or he might be waiting to surprise me.
