B1 #8 pagātne pēc if aizveda prom no realitātes: If I had more time… — laika nav. I wish ir veidots tāpat.

Forma: I wish + teikuma priekšmets + pagātne.

I don't have a car. I wish I had a car.
I can't swim. I wish I could swim.
I have to work on Saturdays. I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays.
It's raining. I wish it wasn't raining.
I'm not very tall. I wish I were taller.

I wish I had a car — „žēl, ka man nav mašīnas”. I wish I didn't have to work — „žēl, ka jāstrādā”. Latviešu „žēl, ka…” nosauc to, kas ir („žēl, ka nav”), angļu frāze — to, kā gribas („gribētu, lai būtu”). Tāpēc, tulkojot no „žēl, ka…”, noliegums pazūd vai parādās. Latviešu „kaut man būtu mašīna!” gan ir veidots tāpat kā angļu frāze: tas nosauc vēlamo, bez nolieguma.

Kāpēc pagātne. I wish I had a car būtībā ir B1 #8 nosacījuma teikuma pirmā puse bez otrās: „ja man būtu mašīna…”. Pagātnes forma arī šeit nozīmē „tā īstenībā nav”. Ja esat apguvuši If I had…, tad I wish I had… veidojas tieši tāpat; bieži tie arī stāv blakus: I wish I had a car. If I had a car, I'd drive to work.

Ar be der were visām personām, kā If I were you; sarunā — arī was. Prasmi izsaka could: I wish I could drive. Pienākumu — didn't have to, jo must pagātnes formas nav (A2 #10).

If only — tas pats, bet stiprāk, gandrīz izsauciens: If only I had more time! — „Kaut nu man būtu vairāk laika!”

I wish + would — gribu, lai kaut kas mainītos. I wish you would stop interrupting me. — „Beidz mani pārtraukt” — ar pārmetumu. I wish it would stop raining. — „Kaut nu lietus beigtos”. would skatās uz priekšu: cilvēks var sākt uzvesties citādi. Par sevi tā nesaka: savu uzvedību jūs maināt paši, bez wish. ✗ I wish I would… vietā — I wish I could… vai I wish I had….

Salīdziniet:

I wish he didn't smoke. Žēl, ka viņš smēķē. — vienkārši nožēla par faktu
I wish he would stop smoking.

I hope you get the job. I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. wish — par to, kā nav: I wish I had a job. Ir arī trešā nozīme — novēlējums ar lietvārdu, bez pagātnes: I wish you luck, We wish you a happy New Year.

Par pagātni („žēl, ka es toreiz ne…”) wish veido citādi, šī forma būs vēlāk. Šeit — tikai par tagadni.

Vēl piemēri:

I wish I knew the answer. Žēl, ka es nezinu atbildi.
I wish you were here. Žēl, ka tevis šeit nav.
I wish my neighbours would turn the music down. Kaut kaimiņi pagrieztu mūziku klusāk.
If only I didn't live so far from work! Kaut nu es nedzīvotu tik tālu no darba!

Tā nesaka. ✗ I wish I didn't must work on Saturdays → ✓ I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays. must nav pagātnes formas, tāpēc pēc wish vajag have to.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Ko nozīmē I wish I lived in the country: cilvēks dzīvo laukos vai ne? Kā pateikt „žēl, ka es nerunāju vāciski”? wish vai hope: „ceru, ka rīt būs saulains”?

rādīt atbildes
nē, viņš dzīvo pilsētā — wish + pagātne runā par to, kā nav; I wish I spoke German (vai I wish I could speak German); hope — tas pilnīgi var notikt: I hope it's sunny tomorrow.

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas

pielāgots tavai valodai
1

Noliegums no latviešu frāzes

I wish I didn't have a car ir pareiza angļu valoda, bet nozīmē pretējo: „žēl, ka man ir mašīna”. Lai pateiktu „žēl, ka man nav mašīnas”, vajag ✓ I wish I had a car. Latviešu frāzē „žēl, ka nav” ir noliegums, un to gribas pārnest. Bet angļu frāze nosauc vēlamo — tāpat kā „kaut man būtu mašīna”.

2

Tagadne pēc wish

✗ I wish I have more time → ✓ I wish I had more time; ✗ I wish I can drive → ✓ I wish I could drive. „Žēl, ka man nav laika” ir tagadnē, un angļu darbības vārdu arī gribas atstāt tagadnē. Bet pēc wish laiks pārbīdās uz pagātni, kā pēc if B1 #8.

3

would par sevi

✗ I wish I would speak Italian

✓ I wish I spoke Italian / I wish I could speak Italian

Latviski vēlēšanos izsaka vēlējuma izteiksme („kaut es runātu itāliski”), un tās ierastais tulkojums ir would (B1 #8). Bet I wish … would saka tikai par cita cilvēka uzvedību vai laikapstākļiem, par sevi — nē.

4

wish hope vietā

✗ I wish you will pass the exam

✓ I hope you pass the exam / I hope you'll pass the exam

I wish I had more time ↘↗

Balss krīt uz uzsvērtā time un beigās mazliet paceļas: „kaut nu…”. Vienmērīgs kritums skan kā sauss konstatējums.

wish — /wɪʃ/: sākumā lūpu /w/, nevis latviešu „v”; patskanis īss /ɪ/, nevis garais „ī”. Savienojumā I wish I skaņa /ʃ/ saplūst ar nākamo I: /aɪ ˈwɪʃ aɪ/ skan bez pauzes.

If only — uzsvars uz only: /ɪf ˈəʊnli/. Pirmā skaņa vārdā only ir divskanis /əʊ/, kā vārdā go, nevis tīrs „o”.

Teksts

I love my flat, but some days I wish I lived somewhere else. It's right in the centre of town, so everything is close. The problem is that it's tiny. I wish I had a proper kitchen — at the moment I cook on a small hob next to the sofa. And I wish the walls weren't so thin.

My neighbour upstairs is a nice young man, but he plays the drums. Every evening at ten, the concert starts. I wish he would practise in the afternoons instead. I've asked him twice, and he always says sorry, but nothing changes.

I also wish I could drive. If I had a car, I'd visit my parents more often. They live in a village in Yorkshire, and the trains there are slow and expensive. If only the buses were better!

Still, I'm not going to move. I like the cafés, the park and the noise of the street. I just hope my neighbour finds a new hobby soon. Maybe I'll buy him a guitar — a quiet one.
