文法

第8課では、if のあとの過去形が現実から離れていました：If I had more time… — 時間はない。 I wish も同じしくみです。「〜でなくて残念だ」「〜ならいいのに」と言うための英語の方法です。

形：I wish ＋ 主語 ＋ 過去形。 動詞は過去形ですが、話しているのは今日のことです。

実際 残念な気持ち

It's raining. I wish it wasn't raining.

大事なこと：肯定と否定が入れかわる。 表を見てください：現実で「ない」ところが、願いでは「ある」になり、その逆もそうです。I wish I had a car — 「車がなくて残念だ」。I wish I didn't have to work — 「働かなければならないのが残念だ」。「〜なくて残念」という日本語は今あることを言い、英語の文は望むことを言います（「あったらいいのに」）。だから「残念」の文から訳すと、否定が消えたり現れたりします。「車があればいいのに」のように望むことから考えると、日本語も英語と同じ形になります。

なぜ過去形か。 I wish I had a car は、じつは第8課の条件文の前半だけで、後半がないものです：「車があったら…」。過去形はここでも「現実にはそうではない」ことを表します。If I had… が使えるなら、 I wish I had… もまったく同じように作れます。よく2つ並べても使います：I wish I had a car. If I had a car, I'd drive to work.

be では、If I were you と同じく、どの人称でも were が使えます。会話では was も使います。できることは could で表します：I wish I could drive. しなければならないことは didn't have to です。 must には過去形がないからです（A2の第10課）。

If only は同じ意味で、もっと強く、 ほとんど叫びのようです：If only I had more time! — 「時間さえあればなあ！」

I wish ＋ would — 何かが変わってほしい。 いらいらさせられるほかの人の行動や、自分の力ではどうにもならないことについて言います： I wish you would stop interrupting me. — 「話をさえぎるのはやめてくれないかな」 — 非難をこめて。 I wish it would stop raining. — 「雨がやんでくれたらなあ」。 would は先を見ています：相手は行動を変えるかもしれません。自分についてはこう言いません：自分の行動は、wish を使わずに自分で変えるものだからです。✗ I wish I would… の代わりに I wish I could… か I wish I had… です。

比べてみましょう：

I wish he didn't smoke. 彼がたばこを吸うのは残念だ。 — 事実を残念に思っているだけ
I wish he would stop smoking. やめてくれたらなあ！ — 変わってほしい、不満がある

wish か hope か。 hope は十分起こりうることについて言い、あとの時制はふつうのままです： I hope you get the job. I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. wish は、そうではないことについて言います：I wish I had a job. 3つ目の意味もあります — 名詞を使った祝福で、過去形にはしません： I wish you luck、We wish you a happy New Year。

過去について（「あのとき〜すればよかった」）は wish の形が違い、それはあとで学びます。ここでは今のことだけです。

ほかの例：

I wish I knew the answer. 答えを知っていたらいいのに。
I wish you were here. あなたがここにいたらいいのに。
I wish my neighbours would turn the music down. 近所の人たちが音楽の音を小さくしてくれたらなあ。
If only I didn't live so far from work! 職場からこんなに遠くに住んでいなければなあ！

こうは言いません。 ✗ I wish I didn't must work on Saturdays → ✓ I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays。must には過去形がないので、wish のあとでは have to が必要です。

確かめてみましょう。 I wish I lived in the country と言う人は、田舎に住んでいますか、住んでいませんか。「ドイツ語が話せなくて残念だ」は英語でどう言いますか。「明日晴れるといいな」は wish ですか、 hope ですか。

「〜なくて残念」の否定を残す。

I wish I didn't have a car は正しい英語ですが、意味は反対で、「車があるのが残念だ」です。「車がなくて残念」と言いたいなら ✓ I wish I had a car。「残念」から訳すと否定が残ってしまいます。「車があればいいのに」と、望むことから考えましょう。

wish のあとを現在形にする。

✗ I wish I have more time → ✓ I wish I had more time、 ✗ I wish I can drive → ✓ I wish I could drive。「時間があればいいのに」の「あれば」には過去の形がないので、動詞を今の形のままにしがちです。でも wish のあとは、第8課の if のあとと同じく、過去形にします。

「〜といいね」を wish で言う。

。「合格を願っています」の「願う」から wish を選びがちです。でも十分ありうる未来には hope を使い、wish は will とは組み合わせません。

発音

残念な気持ちは、下がってから上がるイントネーション（fall-rise）で伝えます。丁寧な苦情（A2の第25課）と同じです：

強勢のある time で声が下がり、最後で少し上がります：「〜だったらなあ」。平らに下がると、ただ事実を述べているだけの、そっけない言い方に聞こえます。

wish は /wɪʃ/： 最初の /w/ は唇をしっかり丸めて発音し、母音は短い /ɪ/ です。「ウィッシュ」の「シュ」のように、最後の /ʃ/ に「ウ」の母音を付けません。I wish I では /ʃ/ が次の I とつながり、 /aɪ ˈwɪʃ aɪ/ は間をあけずに聞こえます。

If only は only に強勢：/ɪf ˈəʊnli/。 only の最初の音は二重母音 /əʊ/ で、go と同じです。カタカナの「オンリー」の「オ」ではありません。

I love my flat, but some days I wish I lived somewhere else. It's right in the centre of town, so everything is close. The problem is that it's tiny. I wish I had a proper kitchen — at the moment I cook on a small hob next to the sofa. And I wish the walls weren't so thin.

My neighbour upstairs is a nice young man, but he plays the drums. Every evening at ten, the concert starts. I wish he would practise in the afternoons instead. I've asked him twice, and he always says sorry, but nothing changes.

I also wish I could drive. If I had a car, I'd visit my parents more often. They live in a village in Yorkshire, and the trains there are slow and expensive. If only the buses were better!

Still, I'm not going to move. I like the cafés, the park and the noise of the street. I just hope my neighbour finds a new hobby soon. Maybe I'll buy him a guitar — a quiet one.
