I had finished. → I'd finished.
She hadn't seen it. (hadn't = had not)
Had you met him before?
Yes, I had. / No, I hadn't.

줄임말 'd는 would에서도 나옵니다 — I'd like(A2 17과)로 이미 알고 있습니다. 다음 단어를 보면 됩니다: had 뒤에는 세 번째 형태(I'd finished), would 뒤에는 동사원형(I'd like)이 옵니다. We had had dinner, so we weren't hungry.

I hadn't seen him for years. 의문문은 현재완료와 똑같이 만들되, have 자리에 had를 놓습니다: Had you eaten? Why had she left so early? Where had they gone? Yes, I had, No, she hadn't.

When I got to the station, the train had left.

She couldn't get in because she had lost her keys.

I had never seen the sea before that summer.

When I arrived, the train left.
When I arrived, the train had left.

I got up, had a shower and left the house.

already, just, never, ever, yet.

The film had already started.
She had just left.
I had never seen snow before.
Had you ever been there before?
They hadn't finished yet.

It was the first time… It was the first time I had flown. It was the best meal I had ever eaten. It's the first time I've been here. It was the first time I flew도 들을 수 있지만, 표준은 Past Perfect입니다.

By nine o'clock everyone had gone home.
I didn't recognise him — he had grown a beard.
We hadn't eaten all day, so we were very hungry.

✗ Did you had seen it before? → ✓ Had you seen it before?

When we got home, the guests had left에서 어느 일이 먼저 일어났습니까? I'd finished, I'd like에서 어느 것이 had이고 어느 것이 would입니까?

손님들이 먼저 떠났고, 우리는 그 뒤에 집에 왔습니다; I'd finished는 had(뒤에 세 번째 형태), I'd like는 would; It was the first time I had seen the sea.

When I arrived, the train left — 영어로는 내가 도착한 뒤에 기차가 떠났다는 뜻입니다. '이미 떠났다'라고 하려면 ✓ When I arrived, the train had already left가 필요합니다.

2

Past Perfect

✗ I had lived in Spain many years ago

✓ I lived in Spain many years ago

✗ She had went home

✗ I had saw it

✓ She had gone home

I had seen it.

4

'처음'을 first time to로 말함

✗ It was my first time to see the sea

✓ It was the first time I had seen the sea

I'd finished는 /aɪd ˈfɪnɪʃt/로 소리 나서 I finished /aɪ ˈfɪnɪʃt/와 거의 같습니다: 자음 앞의 /d/는 거의 들리지 않습니다.

I went, she'd seen과 she saw.

I hadn't seen it /ˈhædnt/, Yes, I had /hæd/.

had had는 막힘 없이 이어서 말합니다: We'd had dinner /wiːd hæd ˈdɪnə/.

Last spring I nearly missed my best friend's wedding. It was in a small village in Wales, and I had booked a train for Saturday morning. I had checked the timetable twice the night before, so I felt calm.

When I got to the station at ten past eight, the platform was empty. The train had already left. The company had changed the timetable a week earlier, but nobody had told me — the email had gone into my spam folder.

I phoned my friend. She didn't answer because she had switched off her phone for the day. In the end her brother picked me up and drove me to the village. We arrived at the church just as the music started. Most of the guests had already sat down, and my friend's mother was looking at the door nervously.

Later, at dinner, I told the story to the whole table. Everyone laughed, and this time I laughed too. It was the first time I had ever been late for a wedding — and I had never felt so stressed in my life.
