| afirmație | I had finished. → I'd finished. |
| negație | She hadn't seen it. (hadn't = had not) |
| întrebare | Had you met him before? |
| răspuns scurt | Yes, I had. / No, I hadn't. |
Forma scurtă 'd vine și de la would — o știi din I'd like (A2 #17). Le deosebești ușor după cuvântul care urmează: după had vine forma a treia (I'd finished), după would — forma de bază (I'd like). La verbul have însuși, Past Perfect arată ca had had: We had had dinner, so we weren't hungry.
Negația — hadn't + forma a treia, fără niciun did: I hadn't seen him for years. Întrebarea se construiește la fel ca în Present Perfect, doar că în locul lui have stă had: Had you eaten? Cu un cuvânt interogativ, had vine imediat după el: Why had she left so early? Where had they gone? În răspunsul scurt forma a treia nu se repetă: Yes, I had, No, she hadn't.
Primul caz — o întâmplare a avut loc înaintea alteia: When I got to the station, the train had left. Întâi a plecat trenul, apoi am ajuns eu.
Al doilea — cauza a ceea ce a urmat: She couldn't get in because she had lost her keys.
Al treilea — experiența până la un moment din trecut: I had never seen the sea before that summer.
| When I arrived, the train left. | Am ajuns, și trenul a pornit: l-am văzut plecând. |
| When I arrived, the train had left.
I got up, had a shower and left the house.
already, just, never, ever, yet.
| The film had already started. | Filmul începuse deja. |
| She had just left. | Tocmai plecase. |
| I had never seen snow before. | Nu mai văzusem niciodată zăpadă. |
| Had you ever been there before? | Mai fuseseși acolo vreodată? |
| They hadn't finished yet. | Încă nu terminaseră. |
„Pentru prima dată”: It was the first time… După această expresie se pune Past Perfect: It was the first time I had flown. — „Atunci zburam pentru prima dată”. La fel după superlativ cu ever: It was the best meal I had ever eaten. La prezent schema e aceeași, dar cu Present Perfect: It's the first time I've been here. În conversație se aude și It was the first time I flew, dar norma este Past Perfect.
Alte exemple:
| By nine o'clock everyone had gone home. | Până la nouă plecaseră toți acasă. |
| I didn't recognise him — he had grown a beard. | Nu l-am recunoscut: își lăsase barbă. |
| We hadn't eaten all day, so we were very hungry. | Nu mâncaserăm nimic toată ziua. |
Așa nu se spune. ✗ Did you had seen it before? → ✓ Had you seen it before?
Verifică-te. Ce întâmplare a fost mai întâi: When we got home, the guests had left? Unde e had și unde e would: I'd finished, I'd like?

„Când am ajuns, trenul a plecat deja” → ✗ When I arrived, the train has already left → ✓ When I arrived, the train had already left.
„E prima dată când vin aici” → ✗ It's the first time I come here → ✓ It's the first time I've been here. Româna pune aici prezentul, iar la trecut imperfectul („era prima dată când vedeam marea”). Engleza socotește experiența până la acel moment: Present Perfect pentru azi, ✓ It was the first time I had seen the sea pentru trecut.
already între verb și complement
„Terminasem deja raportul” → ✗ I had finished already the report → ✓ I had already finished the report.
✗ She had went home
✗ I had saw it
✓ She had gone home
I had seen it.
had had se pronunță fără poticneală: We'd had dinner /wiːd hæd ˈdɪnə/.
Text
5 minLast spring I nearly missed my best friend's wedding. It was in a small village in Wales, and I had booked a train for Saturday morning. I had checked the timetable twice the night before, so I felt calm.
When I got to the station at ten past eight, the platform was empty. The train had already left. The company had changed the timetable a week earlier, but nobody had told me — the email had gone into my spam folder.
I phoned my friend. She didn't answer because she had switched off her phone for the day. In the end her brother picked me up and drove me to the village. We arrived at the church just as the music started. Most of the guests had already sat down, and my friend's mother was looking at the door nervously.
Later, at dinner, I told the story to the whole table. Everyone laughed, and this time I laughed too. It was the first time I had ever been late for a wedding — and I had never felt so stressed in my life.

Last winter I missed an important exam. I had set two alarms, but my phone had switched itself off in the night. When I woke up, the exam had already started. I ran all the way to the university, but the teacher didn't let me in. It was the first time I had missed an exam, and I had never felt so stupid.
