Bastano finché i fatti vanno in ordine.

affermazione I had finished. → I'd finished.
negazione She hadn't seen it. (hadn't = had not)
domanda Had you met him before?
risposta breve Yes, I had. / No, I hadn't.

La forma contratta 'd può venire anche da would: la conosci da I'd like (A2 #17). Si distinguono facilmente dalla parola che segue: dopo had viene la terza forma (I'd finished), dopo would la forma base (I'd like). Lo stesso verbo have al Past Perfect è had had: We had had dinner, so we weren't hungry.

Negazione e domanda. La negazione è hadn't + terza forma, senza nessun did: I hadn't seen him for years. La domanda si costruisce come nel Present Perfect, solo che al posto di have c'è had: Had you eaten? Con una parola interrogativa, had viene subito dopo: Why had she left so early? Where had they gone?

Primo caso: un fatto è avvenuto prima di un altro: When I got to the station, the train had left.

Secondo: la causa di quello che è successo dopo: She couldn't get in because she had lost her keys.

Terzo: l'esperienza fino a un momento del passato: I had never seen the sea before that summer.

When I arrived, the train left.
When I arrived, the train had left.

I got up, had a shower and left the house. L'ordine è già chiaro. Il trapassato serve dove il racconto torna indietro.

already, just, never, ever, yet.

The film had already started. Il film era già cominciato.
She had just left. Se n'era appena andata.
I had never seen snow before. Non avevo mai visto la neve prima.
Had you ever been there before? C'eri mai stato prima?
They hadn't finished yet.

«Per la prima volta»: It was the first time… Dopo questa espressione va il Past Perfect: It was the first time I had flown. — «Era la prima volta che volavo». Lo stesso dopo un superlativo con ever: It was the best meal I had ever eaten. Al presente lo schema è lo stesso, ma con il Present Perfect: It's the first time I've been here. Nella conversazione si sente anche It was the first time I flew, ma la norma è il Past Perfect.

Altri esempi:

By nine o'clock everyone had gone home. Alle nove erano già andati tutti a casa.
I didn't recognise him — he had grown a beard.
We hadn't eaten all day, so we were very hungry.

✗ Did you had seen it before? → ✓ Had you seen it before?

Che cosa è successo prima: When we got home, the guests had left? Dov'è had e dov'è would: I'd finished, I'd like?

gli ospiti se n'erano andati prima che arrivassimo noi; I'd finished è had (dopo viene la terza forma), I'd like è would; It was the first time I had seen the sea.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

was al posto di had

«Quando sono arrivato, Tom era già arrivato» → ✗ When I got there, Tom was already arrived → ✓ When I got there, Tom had already arrived; ✗ She was gone home → ✓ She had gone home.

2

Il trapassato senza un momento successivo

«Te l'avevo detto!» → ✗ I had told you! → ✓ I told you!; ✗ I had lived in Spain many years ago → ✓ I lived in Spain many years ago.

3

«Da anni» con il passato semplice

«Non lo vedevo da anni» → ✗ I didn't see him since years → ✓ I hadn't seen him for years.

«È la prima volta che vengo qui» → ✗ It's the first time I come here → ✓ It's the first time I've been here. L'inglese conta l'esperienza fino a oggi, perciò ci vuole il perfetto. Al passato, un gradino più indietro: «era la prima volta che volavo» → ✓ It was the first time I had flown.

Pronuncia

4 min

had nell'affermazione è atono: /həd/, e dopo un pronome è solo /d/. I'd finished suona /aɪd ˈfɪnɪʃt/ — quasi come I finished /aɪ ˈfɪnɪʃt/: la /d/ davanti a consonante quasi non si sente.

Perciò, all'ascolto, appoggiati al verbo principale quando è irregolare: I'd gone contro I went, she'd seen contro she saw. Lo stesso trucco funziona con il perfetto (A2 #20).

Nella negazione e nella risposta breve had è accentato e pieno: I hadn't seen it /ˈhædnt/, Yes, I had /hæd/.

had had si pronuncia senza inciampare: We'd had dinner /wiːd hæd ˈdɪnə/.

Testo

5 min

Last spring I nearly missed my best friend's wedding. It was in a small village in Wales, and I had booked a train for Saturday morning. I had checked the timetable twice the night before, so I felt calm.

When I got to the station at ten past eight, the platform was empty. The train had already left. The company had changed the timetable a week earlier, but nobody had told me — the email had gone into my spam folder.

I phoned my friend. She didn't answer because she had switched off her phone for the day. In the end her brother picked me up and drove me to the village. We arrived at the church just as the music started. Most of the guests had already sat down, and my friend's mother was looking at the door nervously.

Later, at dinner, I told the story to the whole table. Everyone laughed, and this time I laughed too. It was the first time I had ever been late for a wedding — and I had never felt so stressed in my life.
