Turn on the light. = Turn the light on.
Turn it on.
Fill in the form that I sent you yesterday.

このタイプには turn on / turn off、put on(着る)、take off(脱ぐ)、pick up(拾う、迎えに行く)、fill in(記入する)、throw away(捨てる)、give back(返す)、look up(辞書やネットで調べる)、put off(延期する)、turn down(断る;音を小さくする)があります。

Who's going to look after the children? ✗ look the children after
Who's going to look after them? ✗ look them after
I ran into an old friend yesterday.
She's dealing with the problem.

ほかに look for(探す)、get on / get off(バスなどに乗る、降りる)、look into(調べる、原因を探る)、come across(偶然見つける)もこのタイプです。

The car broke down. 故障した
I grew up in a small town. 育った
He turned up an hour late.
We set off at six. 出発した
Students don't earn much, but they get by.

I'm looking forward to the holidays.
I can't put up with the noise.
We've run out of milk.
I get on with my colleagues.
She came up with a great idea.

look forward to + -ing。 ここの to は be used to(第33課)と同じく前置詞です。 I'm looking forward to seeing you. ✗ to see you ではありません。 I look forward to hearing from you.

ふつうは次のように示されます:turn something on(目的語の場所が間にある — 分離できる)、look after somebody(目的語は後ろ — 分離できない)、break down(目的語なし)。

Take off your shoes. — Take them off.
The plane took off at ten.
I'll pick you up at seven.
Could you turn the music up?
Nobody turned up.

put off postpone 延期する
turn down refuse, reject 断る
go on continue 続ける
come back return 戻る

We have postponed the party We've put off the party — 友だちどうしならこう言います。

Can you look up his number?
I threw the old newspapers away.
The meeting has been put off until Friday.
How did you find out?

✗ I'm looking for it forward — 3語の句動詞の部品は分けられません: ✓ I'm looking forward to it。

Switch off the TV. Can you look after the dog? の the dog も。

Switch it off; Can you look after it? I'm looking forward to seeing you または I'm looking forward to our meeting.

✗ Turn on it、✗ I'll pick up you at seven → ✓ Turn it on、 ✓ I'll pick you up at seven。turn on the light

✗ I'm looking forward to see you

✓ I'm looking forward to seeing you

。第33課の be used to と同じく、to を見ると「to + 原形」が反射的に出てきます。

✗ I can't put up the noise → ✓ I can't put up with the noise; ✗ We've run out milk → ✓ We've run out of milk。

Turn it off. I grew up in Leeds. He turned up late. The car broke down.

3語の句動詞では、強勢は2つの小さな語の1つ目に置きます:put up with では up、run out of では out、get on with では on です。look forward to では for です:/lʊk ˈfɔːwəd tə/。

I looked at the picture では強勢は意味の中心の動詞 looked にあり、at には強勢がありません。一方 Look out!

動詞の最後の子音が、小さな語や代名詞の母音とつながります:turn it on は /tɜːnɪˈtɒn/、pick it up は /pɪkɪˈtʌp/、fill it in は /fɪlɪˈtɪn/ のように聞こえます。

Last Monday our washing machine broke down in the middle of a wash. There was water everywhere, so I turned the machine off at the wall and looked up a repair service online. I filled in a form on their website, and they promised to send someone on Wednesday.

On Wednesday I waited all morning, but nobody turned up. I rang them, and a very polite woman said she would look into it. In the end the engineer came on Thursday. He found out what was wrong in five minutes, dealt with it in half an hour, and I paid him on the spot.

The washing machine isn't our only problem. We get on well with most of our neighbours, but I can't put up with the music from the flat above any longer. They turn it up every night at eleven. Last week I ran into the owner on the stairs and asked him to turn it down. He said he would, but nothing has changed.

So we've decided to move. Our contract runs out in September, and we've already found a little house near the park. I'm really looking forward to moving out — and to buying a new washing machine.

Last month my laptop broke down. I looked up a repair shop and took it there. They said they would look into it, but nobody rang me for a week. In the end I went back and found out that they had lost my form. I filled it in again, and they dealt with the problem the next day. I can't put up with bad service, but they apologised, so I'm not angry.
