في A2 #22 عرفتَ ما الفعل المركّب (phrasal verb): فعل تتبعه كلمة صغيرة (on، up، off، out…)، ومعاً يحملان معنى جديداً — turn on «يشغّل»، hang up «يُنهي المكالمة».

Turn on the light. = Turn the light on.
Turn it on.
Fill in the form that I sent you yesterday.

ومنها turn on / turn off، وput on (يلبس)، وtake off (يخلع)، وpick up (يرفع؛ يُقِلّ)، وfill in (يملأ استمارة)، وthrow away (يرمي)، وgive back (يُعيد)، وlook up (يبحث في القاموس أو في الإنترنت)، وput off (يؤجّل)، وturn down (يرفض؛ يخفض الصوت).

Who's going to look after the children? ✗ look the children after
Who's going to look after them? ✗ look them after
I ran into an old friend yesterday.
She's dealing with the problem.

ومنها أيضاً look for (يبحث عن)، وget on / get off (يركب الحافلة، ينزل منها)، وlook into (يتحرّى، يبحث في الأمر)، وcome across (يعثر على).

The car broke down.
I grew up in a small town.
He turned up an hour late.
We set off at six.
Students don't earn much, but they get by.

I'm looking forward to the holidays.
I can't put up with the noise.
We've run out of milk.
I get on with my colleagues.
She came up with a great idea.

look forward to + -ing. to هنا حرف جرّ، كما في be used to (B1 #33)، ولذلك يأتي بعدها صيغة -ing أو اسم: I'm looking forward to seeing you. لا ✗ to see you. I look forward to hearing from you.

ويُكتب عادةً هكذا: turn something on (مكان المفعول في الوسط — الفعل منفصل)، look after somebody (المفعول بعده — غير منفصل)، break down (بلا مفعول).

Take off your shoes. — Take them off.
The plane took off at ten.
I'll pick you up at seven.
Could you turn the music up?
Nobody turned up.

find out discover يعرف، يكتشف
put off postpone يؤجّل
turn down refuse, reject يرفض
go on continue يواصل
come back return يعود

We have postponed the party — صحيح نحوياً، لكنه يبدو كإعلان رسمي. We've put off the party — فهكذا يتكلّم الأصدقاء.

Can you look up his number?
I threw the old newspapers away.
The meeting has been put off until Friday.
How did you find out?

✗ I'm looking for it forward — أجزاء الفعل الثلاثي لا تنفصل: ✓ I'm looking forward to it.

ضع ضميراً مكان the TV: Switch off the TV. Can you look after the dog?

Switch it off; Can you look after it? I'm looking forward to seeing you أو I'm looking forward to our meeting.

✗ Turn on it، ✗ I'll pick up you at seven → ✓ Turn it on، ✓ I'll pick you up at seven. والعكس أيضاً: ✗ look them after → ✓ look after them — قاعدة «في الوسط» للمنفصلة وحدها.

2

look forward to + الصيغة الأصلية

✗ I look forward to see you

✓ I look forward to seeing you

✗ I can't put up the noise → ✓ I can't put up with the noise؛ ✗ We've run out milk → ✓ We've run out of milk. لكنّ put up بدون with معناها «يعلّق، يرفع».

4

return back

✗ I'll return back at six → ✓ I'll come back at six أو ✓ I'll return at six.

Turn it off. I grew up in Leeds. He turned up late. The car broke down.

وفي الأفعال الثلاثية النبر على أولى الكلمتين الصغيرتين: في put up with — على up، وفي run out of — على out، وفي get on with — على on. وفي look forward to — على for: /lʊk ˈfɔːwəd tə/.

I looked at the picture النبر على الفعل ذي المعنى looked، وat غير منبورة. أمّا في Look out!

الصامت في آخر الفعل يتّصل بصائت الكلمة الصغيرة أو الضمير: turn it on تُسمَع /tɜːnɪˈtɒn/، وpick it up — /pɪkɪˈtʌp/، وfill it in — /fɪlɪˈtɪn/.

Last Monday our washing machine broke down in the middle of a wash. There was water everywhere, so I turned the machine off at the wall and looked up a repair service online. I filled in a form on their website, and they promised to send someone on Wednesday.

On Wednesday I waited all morning, but nobody turned up. I rang them, and a very polite woman said she would look into it. In the end the engineer came on Thursday. He found out what was wrong in five minutes, dealt with it in half an hour, and I paid him on the spot.

The washing machine isn't our only problem. We get on well with most of our neighbours, but I can't put up with the music from the flat above any longer. They turn it up every night at eleven. Last week I ran into the owner on the stairs and asked him to turn it down. He said he would, but nothing has changed.

So we've decided to move. Our contract runs out in September, and we've already found a little house near the park. I'm really looking forward to moving out — and to buying a new washing machine.

Last month my laptop broke down. I looked up a repair shop and took it there. They said they would look into it, but nobody rang me for a week. In the end I went back and found out that they had lost my form. I filled it in again, and they dealt with the problem the next day. I can't put up with bad service, but they apologised, so I'm not angry.
