16 minLa A2 #22 ai aflat ce e un verb frazal: un verb plus un cuvânt mic (on, up, off, out…), iar împreună înseamnă ceva nou — turn on „a porni”, hang up „a închide telefonul”. Tot acolo era regula principală a ordinii cuvintelor: pronumele stă la mijloc — Turn it on.
| Turn on the light. = Turn the light on. | substantivul — oriunde |
| Turn it on. | pronumele — doar la mijloc |
| Fill in the form that I sent you yesterday. | complementul lung — după |
Aici intră turn on / turn off, put on (a îmbrăca, a pune pe tine), take off (a scoate, a dezbrăca), pick up (a ridica, a lua pe cineva), fill in (a completa), throw away (a arunca), give back (a da înapoi), look up (a căuta în dicționar sau pe internet), put off (a amâna), turn down (a refuza; a da mai încet).
Tipul 2.
| Who's going to look after the children? | ✗ look the children after |
| Who's going to look after them? | ✗ look them after |
| I ran into an old friend yesterday. | am întâlnit din întâmplare |
| She's dealing with the problem. | se ocupă de problemă |
Tot aici intră look for (a căuta), get on / get off (a urca în autobuz, a coborî), look into (a cerceta, a lămuri), come across (a da peste).
| The car broke down. | s-a stricat |
| I grew up in a small town. | am crescut |
| He turned up an hour late. | a apărut, a venit |
| We set off at six. | am pornit la drum |
| Students don't earn much, but they get by. | se descurcă, o scot la capăt |
Tipul 4.
| I'm looking forward to the holidays. | aștept cu nerăbdare |
| I can't put up with the noise. | a suporta, a tolera |
| We've run out of milk. | am rămas fără, s-a terminat |
| I get on with my colleagues. | a se înțelege bine cu |
| She came up with a great idea. | a venit cu (o idee), a născocit |
look forward to + -ing. Aici to e o prepoziție, ca în be used to (B1 #33), de aceea după el vine forma în -ing sau un substantiv: I'm looking forward to seeing you. — „Abia aștept să ne vedem”. Nu ✗ to see you. În scrisori e o încheiere fixă: I look forward to hearing from you.
De obicei e scris așa: turn something on (locul complementului e la mijloc — verbul e separabil), look after somebody (complementul după — neseparabil), break down (fără complement).
| Take off your shoes. — Take them off. | a scoate (tipul 1) |
| The plane took off at ten. | a decolat (tipul 3) |
| I'll pick you up at seven. | trec să te iau (tipul 1) |
| Could you turn the music up? | a da mai tare (tipul 1) |
| Nobody turned up. | n-a venit nimeni (tipul 3) |
|---|---|---|
| find out | discover | a afla |
| put off | postpone | a amâna |
| turn down | refuse, reject | a refuza, a respinge |
| go on | continue | a continua |
| come back | return | a se întoarce |
| look into | investigate | a cerceta, a lămuri |
We've put off the party — așa vorbesc prietenii.
Încă exemple:
| Can you look up his number? | Caută-i numărul (pe internet). |
| I threw the old newspapers away. | Am aruncat ziarele vechi. |
| The meeting has been put off until Friday. | Ședința a fost amânată pe vineri. |
| How did you find out? | Cum ai aflat? |
Așa nu se spune. ✗ I'm looking for it forward — părțile unui verb din trei părți nu se despart: ✓ I'm looking forward to it.
Verifică-te. Înlocuiește the TV cu un pronume: Switch off the TV. Acum the dog în Can you look after the dog? Cum spui „Aștept cu nerăbdare întâlnirea noastră”?

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română
adaptat pentru limba taPronumele la sfârșit
„Stinge-l”, „trec să te iau la șapte” → ✗ Turn off it, ✗ I'll pick up you at seven → ✓ Turn it off, ✓ I'll pick you up at seven.
„Abia aștept să te văd” → ✗ I'm looking forward to see you → ✓ I'm looking forward to seeing you. „Să” + verb trece în engleză ca to + forma de bază, ca la want to. Dar aici to e prepoziție, ca în be used to, și după el vine -ing.
„A suporta” → support
„Nu suport zgomotul” → ✗ I can't support the noise → ✓ I can't put up with the noise. support înseamnă „a susține”, nu „a tolera”. Și pentru că „a suporta” n-are prepoziție, se pierde și with: ✗ I can't put up the noise. Dar put up singur înseamnă „a agăța”, „a ridica”.
„S-a terminat laptele”
✗ We've run out milk
✓ We've run out of milk
Fără el verbul nu poate lua complement: ori We've run out of milk, ori The milk has run out.
Turn it off. I grew up in Leeds. He turned up late. The car broke down.
La verbele din trei părți accentul cade pe primul dintre cele două cuvinte mici: în put up with — pe up, în run out of — pe out, în get on with — pe on. În look forward to — pe for: /lʊk ˈfɔːwəd tə/.
Legarea cuvintelor. Consoana de la sfârșitul verbului se leagă de vocala particulei sau a pronumelui: turn it on sună /tɜːnɪˈtɒn/, pick it up — /pɪkɪˈtʌp/, fill it in — /fɪlɪˈtɪn/.
Text
5 minLast Monday our washing machine broke down in the middle of a wash. There was water everywhere, so I turned the machine off at the wall and looked up a repair service online. I filled in a form on their website, and they promised to send someone on Wednesday.
On Wednesday I waited all morning, but nobody turned up. I rang them, and a very polite woman said she would look into it. In the end the engineer came on Thursday. He found out what was wrong in five minutes, dealt with it in half an hour, and I paid him on the spot.
The washing machine isn't our only problem. We get on well with most of our neighbours, but I can't put up with the music from the flat above any longer. They turn it up every night at eleven. Last week I ran into the owner on the stairs and asked him to turn it down. He said he would, but nothing has changed.
So we've decided to move. Our contract runs out in September, and we've already found a little house near the park. I'm really looking forward to moving out — and to buying a new washing machine.

Model
Last month my laptop broke down. I looked up a repair shop and took it there. They said they would look into it, but nobody rang me for a week. In the end I went back and found out that they had lost my form. I filled it in again, and they dealt with the problem the next day. I can't put up with bad service, but they apologised, so I'm not angry.
