I used to live in a village.

I used to get up at ten.
be used to + -ing I'm used to getting up early.
get used to + -ing I'm getting used to the early mornings.

used to — A2の第28課の復習。 Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. there There used to be a cinema here. 今のことに used to は使いません:今ふだんしていることは usually で言います — I usually get up at seven。

be used to — 「慣れている」。

I'm used to the noise.
She isn't used to working at night.
Are you used to the cold?
At first we weren't used to driving on the left.

be used to のあとが -ing 形なのはなぜか。 ここの to は動詞の前に置く不定詞の to ではなく、前置詞です — interested in(第26課)の in や、apologise for(第16課)の for と同じです。 確かめ方:動詞の代わりに名詞を置けるなら — I'm used to the cold — その to は前置詞で、動詞を置くなら I'm used to working になります。

get used to — 「慣れる」。

I'm getting used to it.
You'll get used to it.
I've got used to the new job.
It took me a year to get used to the climate.
I can't get used to driving on the left.

I've got used to it と I'm used to it

  • 前に何もない(I used to) — 過去のことで、あとは原形;
  • 前に be がある(I'm used to、She was used to) — 「慣れている」で、あとは -ing 形;
(I'm getting used to、You'll get used to) — 「慣れる」で、あとは -ing 形。

I used to live alone.
I'm used to living alone.
I'm getting used to living alone.

Every summer we would go to my grandparents'. My grandfather would take us fishing. We'd swim in the river every day. (When I was a child…、Every summer…)

  • 動作だけで、状態には使えません。 be、have、live、like、know には used to だけです: I used to have a dog で、✗ I would have a dog ではありません。これは「(もし〜なら)犬を飼うのに」という意味になります — 第2条件文(第8課)です;
I would go to the cinema
used to would
We used to play outside. ✓ We would play outside.
I used to live in a village. ✗
We moved in 2019.

「慣れている」 — be used to。「(やっと)慣れた」「もう慣れた」 — have got used to。「慣れてきた」「そのうち慣れる」「なかなか慣れない」 — get used to。

We used to go camping every summer.
There used to be a bakery on this corner.
I'm not used to eating so late.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the new system.
On Sundays my dad would make pancakes.

✗ I got used to get up early → ✓ I got used to getting up early。be used to と同じく、get used to のあとも -ing 形です。

形を入れてください:I used to ___ (drive) と I'm used to ___ (drive)。 When I was a child, I would have a cat

drive、driving; You'll get used to it; 言えない:ここの have は状態なので、I used to have a cat が必要.

1

be used to のあとを原形にする。

✗ I'm used to get up early

✓ I'm used to getting up early

✗ I used to getting up early → ✓ I used to get up early(以前は)または ✓ I'm used to getting up early(慣れている)。

used to は、どちらの意味でも /ˈjuːstə/ です。

発音

4分

used to と be used to は同じ発音 — /ˈjuːstə/: 無声の /s/ で、/d/ はなく、to は弱い /tə/ です。

I used to work there. /aɪ ˈjuːstə wɜːk/ —
I'm used to working there. /aɪm ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːkɪŋ/ — used の前に 'm、あとに -ing

I used a knife /aɪ juːzd ə ˈnaɪf/。used to では無声の /s/ と /t/ です:/juːst/。

話の中の would はほとんど聞こえません: we'd go /wiːd ˈɡəʊ/、he'd take /hiːd ˈteɪk/ — would は短い /d/ だけになり、「ド」と母音を足しません。

I grew up on a farm in Wales. When I was a child, I used to get up at six to help my dad with the animals. In winter it was still dark, and my brother and I would walk to the school bus with torches. We didn't use to have the internet at home, so in the evenings we'd read or play cards.

A few years ago I moved to London for work, and it was a shock. I wasn't used to the noise, the crowds or the prices. For the first few months I couldn't sleep because of the traffic outside my window. But you get used to everything. Now I'm used to the noise — I hardly hear it any more. I'm used to taking the Tube, and I've even got used to paying four pounds for a coffee.

The one thing I'm still getting used to is my tiny flat. I used to have a whole house and a garden; now I have one room and a window box with three plants in it. My mum says I'll get used to it. Maybe. But every time I go home, I spend the whole weekend outside.

When I was a student, I used to sleep until eleven. I would stay up late and work at night. Then I got a job in an office, and at first I wasn't used to getting up at seven. Now I'm used to it, and I even like the quiet mornings. I'm still getting used to wearing a suit, though.

チェックリスト:be used to と get used to のあとは -ing 形ですか。
