| Turn on the light. = Turn the light on.
| Turn it on.
| Fill in the form that I sent you yesterday. |
属于这一类的有 turn on / turn off,put on(穿上),take off(脱下),pick up(捡起;接人), fill in(填写),throw away(扔掉),give back(归还),look up(在词典或网上查),put off (推迟),turn down(拒绝;调小声音)。
| Who's going to look after the children? | ✗ look the children after |
| Who's going to look after them? | ✗ look them after |
| I ran into an old friend yesterday. |
| She's dealing with the problem. |
属于这一类的还有 look for(寻找),get on / get off(上车,下车),look into(调查,弄清楚), come across(偶然发现)。
| The car broke down.
| I grew up in a small town. |
| He turned up an hour late. |
| We set off at six. |
| Students don't earn much, but they get by.
| I'm looking forward to the holidays. |
| I can't put up with the noise. |
| We've run out of milk. |
| I get on with my colleagues. |
| She came up with a great idea. |
look forward to + -ing。 这里的 to 是介词,和 be used to(第33课)里一样,所以后面接 -ing 形式或者名词:I'm looking forward to seeing you.——“我很期待见到你。”不说 ✗ to see you。 I look forward to hearing from you.
词典里通常这样写:turn something on(宾语的位置在中间——可分的),look after somebody(宾语在后面——不可分的),break down(不带宾语)。
| Take off your shoes. — Take them off.
| The plane took off at ten. |
| I'll pick you up at seven. |
| Could you turn the music up?
| Nobody turned up.
|---|---|---|
| find out | discover | 得知,发现 |
| put off | postpone | 推迟 |
| turn down | refuse, reject | 拒绝 |
| go on | continue | 继续 |
| come back | return | 回来 |
We have postponed the party——语法没错,可听起来像在发通知。We've put off the party——朋友之间这样说。
| Can you look up his number? | |
| I threw the old newspapers away. | |
| The meeting has been put off until Friday. | |
| How did you find out?
✗ I'm looking for it forward——三个部分的短语动词不能拆开:✓ I'm looking forward to it。
把 Switch off the TV. Can you look after the dog?

✗ Turn on it,✗ I'll pick up you at seven → ✓ Turn it on, ✓ I'll pick you up at seven。
✗ Who will look the children after?,✗ look them after → ✓ look after them。
look forward to + 动词原形。
✗ I'm looking forward to see you
✓ I'm looking forward to seeing you
可这里的 to 是介词,和 be used to 一样,后面用 -ing。
✗ I can't put up the noise → ✓ I can't put up with the noise; ✗ We've run out milk → ✓ We've run out of milk。
We have postponed the party,I discovered the truth 和朋友说话时,选 put off, find out。
Turn it off. I grew up in Leeds. He turned up late. The car broke down.
三个部分的短语动词,重音落在两个小词中的第一个上:put up with 落在 up 上,run out of 落在 out 上,get on with 落在 on 上。look forward to 落在 for 上:/lʊk ˈfɔːwəd tə/。
I looked at the picture 里重音在实义动词 looked 上,at 不重读。
动词末尾的辅音和后面小词或代词开头的元音连在一起:turn it on 听起来像 /tɜːnɪˈtɒn/, pick it up 像 /pɪkɪˈtʌp/,fill it in 像 /fɪlɪˈtɪn/。
Last Monday our washing machine broke down in the middle of a wash. There was water everywhere, so I turned the machine off at the wall and looked up a repair service online. I filled in a form on their website, and they promised to send someone on Wednesday.
On Wednesday I waited all morning, but nobody turned up. I rang them, and a very polite woman said she would look into it. In the end the engineer came on Thursday. He found out what was wrong in five minutes, dealt with it in half an hour, and I paid him on the spot.
The washing machine isn't our only problem. We get on well with most of our neighbours, but I can't put up with the music from the flat above any longer. They turn it up every night at eleven. Last week I ran into the owner on the stairs and asked him to turn it down. He said he would, but nothing has changed.
So we've decided to move. Our contract runs out in September, and we've already found a little house near the park. I'm really looking forward to moving out — and to buying a new washing machine.

Last month my laptop broke down. I looked up a repair shop and took it there. They said they would look into it, but nobody rang me for a week. In the end I went back and found out that they had lost my form. I filled it in again, and they dealt with the problem the next day. I can't put up with bad service, but they apologised, so I'm not angry.
