A2 7과에서 비교하는 법을 배웠습니다: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as.

훨씬 much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
조금 a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
한층 더 (이미 그런데 더) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot과 a bit은 구어체이고, far와 slightly는 중립적이라 보고서에도 씁니다. much는 어디에나 어울립니다. even은 앞의 것도 이미 그랬다는 뜻입니다: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very는 비교급과 함께 쓰지 않습니다: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very는 성질 자체를 강하게 하고(very cheap), 두 가지 사이의 차이는 much와 far로 잽니다.

(She drives much more carefully than me)와, 명사 앞의 more, less에도 쓰입니다: far more money, a lot less time. 셀 수 있는 명사의 복수형에는 much more 대신 many more나 far more를 씁니다: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

'두 배'는 twice이지 ✗ two times가 아닙니다; 그다음은 three times, four times. '절반 크기, 반값, 절반 길이'는 half로 말하는 것이 가장 편합니다: half the price, half the size, half as long. three times more expensive than도 들을 수 있습니다 — 특히 뉴스에서 이렇게도 말합니다. 하지만 three times as expensive as가 더 안전합니다: 뜻이 하나로만 읽힙니다.

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

긴 형용사에서는 more만 되풀이합니다: more and more expensive이지 ✗ more expensive and more expensive가 아닙니다.

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired와 mistakes가 more 바로 뒤에 있습니다. 짧은 공식은 동사 없이도 됩니다: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better.

Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. The price rose to five pounds. 동사: 위로 — go up, rise(B1 13과), increase; 아래로 — go down, fall, drop.

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

✗ much more better → ✓ much better.

I read more와 I understand more를 the …, the …

a bit more expensive 또는 slightly more expensive; half the price(또는 half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand.

✗ much more cheaper

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

차이는 much, far로 말하고, more와 -er은 둘 중 하나만.

2

✗ two times bigger

✗ twice bigger than

✓ twice as big as

영어는 twice as … as이고, '절반', '반값'은 half입니다.

3

✗ More I practise, better I speak → ✓ The more I practise, the better I speak. 또 '피곤할수록'을 보통 어순으로 짜면 ✗ The more you become tired…가 됩니다 → ✓ The more tired you become…

4

'점점'은 늘 more and more

✗ more and more cold

✓ colder and colder

'점점 = more and more'로 외워 두면 짧은 형용사에도 붙입니다.

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

약한 형태: twice as big as의 as는 /əz/, than은 /ðən/으로 소리 납니다: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/.

이 과의 단어: twice /twaɪs/ — 끝은 무성음 /s/; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — 둘째 음절에는 모음이 거의 없습니다; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — 강세는 cent에.

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.
