في A2 #7 تعلّمتَ المقارنة: cheaper than، more expensive than، as … as.

بكثير much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
قليلاً a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
أكثر حتى (ممّا هو عليه أصلاً) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot وa bit للحديث اليومي، وfar وslightly محايدتان، تُكتبان في التقارير أيضاً. Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very لا تجتمع مع صيغة المقارنة: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very تقوّي الصفة نفسها (very cheap)، أمّا الفرق بين شيئين فيُقاس بـmuch وfar.

(She drives much more carefully than me) ومع more وless قبل الاسم: far more money، a lot less time. ومع الأسماء المعدودة بصيغة الجمع يُقال بدل much more — many more أو far more: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

«مرّتين» — twice، لا ✗ two times؛ وبعدها three times، four times. و«أصغر، أرخص، أقصر بالنصف» أسهل ما تُقال بـhalf، كما في العربية «نصف الثمن»: half the price، half the size، half as long. وستسمع أيضاً three times more expensive than — فهكذا يُقال كذلك، خصوصاً في الأخبار. لكنّ three times as expensive as أضمن: تُفهم بمعنى واحد.

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

في الصفات الطويلة تتكرّر more وحدها: more and more expensive، لا ✗ more expensive and more expensive.

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired وmistakes تأتيان مباشرة بعد more. والعبارات القصيرة تستغني عن الفعل: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better.

التغيّر بالأرقام: by. لتقول بكم ارتفع شيء أو انخفض، يلزم حرف الجرّ by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. والمستوى الذي وصل إليه — to: The price rose to five pounds. الأفعال: صعوداً — go up، rise (B1 #13)، increase؛ ونزولاً — go down، fall، drop.

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

✗ much more better → ✓ much better.

اجمع I read more وI understand more في جملة واحدة بـthe …, the ….

a bit more expensive أو slightly more expensive; half the price (أو half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand.

1

more مع -er

✗ much more cheaper، ✗ more better → ✓ much cheaper، ✓ much better.

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

فتُنقل إلى very. والصواب مع صيغة المقارنة — much أو far أو a lot.

3

✗ twice bigger، ✗ two times bigger → ✓ twice as big، ✓ half the price. وفي الإنجليزية: twice as … as.

4

ترتيب the …, the …

✗ The more you are tired, the more you make mistakes

✓ The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

في the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

الصيغ الضعيفة: as في twice as big as تُنطق /əz/، وthan — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/.

كلمات الدرس: twice /twaɪs/ — في آخرها /s/ مهموسة؛ slightly /ˈslaɪtli/؛ even /ˈiːvn/ — المقطع الثاني يكاد يخلو من الصائت؛ per cent /pə ˈsent/ — النبر على cent.

النص

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
