کہیں زیادہ much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
تھوڑا سا a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
اور بھی (پہلے ہی کافی تھا) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very تفضیلِ بعض کے ساتھ نہیں آتا: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper۔ very صفت کو اکیلے زور دیتا ہے (very cheap)، اور دو چیزوں کا فرق much اور far ناپتے ہیں۔

(She drives much more carefully than me) اور اسم سے پہلے more، less کے ساتھ بھی آتے ہیں: far more money، a lot less time۔ جمع میں گنے جانے والے اسموں کے ساتھ much more کی جگہ many more یا far more کہتے ہیں: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

“دو گنا، دو بار” — twice، ✗ two times نہیں؛ آگے three times، four times۔ “آدھی قیمت”، “آدھا سائز”، “آدھا وقت” کے لیے سب سے آسان half ہے: half the price، half the size، half as long۔ آپ three times more expensive than بھی سنیں گے — یوں بھی کہتے ہیں، خاص طور پر خبروں میں۔ مگر three times as expensive as زیادہ محفوظ ہے: اس کا مطلب ایک ہی سمجھا جاتا ہے۔

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

لمبی صفات میں صرف more دہرایا جاتا ہے: more and more expensive، ✗ more expensive and more expensive نہیں۔

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired اور mistakes فوراً more کے بعد ہیں۔ مختصر فقرے فعل کے بغیر بھی بنتے ہیں: The sooner, the better. — “جتنا جلدی، اتنا اچھا”۔ The bigger, the better.

Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. — “آنے والوں کی تعداد آدھی رہ گئی”۔ جس سطح تک پہنچے، اس کے لیے to: The price rose to five pounds. — “قیمت بڑھ کر پانچ پاؤنڈ ہو گئی”۔ افعال: اوپر — go up، rise (سبق 13)، increase؛ نیچے — go down، fall، drop۔

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

یوں نہیں کہتے۔ ✗ much more better → ✓ much better۔ تفضیلِ بعض ایک ہی طریقے سے بنتی ہے: یا -er، یا more (A2 کا سبق 7)، اور much تیار شکل سے پہلے آتا ہے۔

I read more اور I understand more سے the …, the …

a bit more expensive یا slightly more expensive; half the price (یا half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand۔

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

✗ much more better، ✗ more and more cold → ✓ much better، ✓ colder and colder۔ “زیادہ بہتر”، “زیادہ ٹھنڈا” — اردو میں موازنہ الگ لفظ سے ہوتا ہے، اس لیے more چھوٹی صفت اور -er والی شکل کے ساتھ بھی لگ جاتا ہے (A2 کا سبق 7)۔

3

✗ two times bigger

✓ twice as big

4

the کے بغیر the …, the …۔

✗ More I practise, better I speak

✓ The more I practise, the better I speak

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

کمزور شکلیں: twice as big as میں as /əz/ سنائی دیتا ہے، than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/۔ زور twice پر اور صفت پر۔

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.

کیا “دو گنا” — twice as … as یا half سے ہے، two times کے بغیر؟ کیا the …, the …
