Näyttää muutos ja verrata
Osaan sanoa paitsi sen, että jokin on suurempi, myös sen, kuinka paljon, ja kuvata muutosta.
Ilmoitettu ydinaika. Kaksi ydinosaa ei sisällä lukua, joten todellinen oppitunti on tätä summaa pidempi.

18 minOppitunnilla A2 #7 opit vertaamaan: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as. Siellä oli myös much cheaper — ”paljon halvempi”. Oppitunnilla B1 #28 sama tuli adverbeihin: more carefully. Nyt vertailusta tulee tarkkaa. Osaat sanoa, kuinka paljon yksi on suurempi kuin toinen, kuinka monta kertaa, miten jokin muuttuu ajan myötä ja miten yksi muutos tuo mukanaan toisen.
Kuinka paljon: sana komparatiivin edellä.
| kuinka paljon | sanat | esimerkki |
|---|---|---|
| paljon | much, far, a lot | This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable. |
| vähän | a bit, a little, slightly | It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher. |
| vielä (enemmän kuin jo valmiiksi) | even | It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder. |
a lot ja a bit ovat puhekieltä, far ja slightly neutraaleja, niitä kirjoitetaan myös raportteihin. much sopii kaikkialle. even tarkoittaa, että ensimmäinenkin oli jo sellainen: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller. — ”Tom on pitkä, mutta hänen veljensä on vielä pitempi”.
very ei käy komparatiivin kanssa: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very vahvistaa ominaisuutta sellaisenaan (very cheap), mutta kahden asian välistä eroa mitataan sanoilla much ja far.
Samat sanat toimivat adverbien kanssa (She drives much more carefully than me) ja sanojen more, less kanssa substantiivin edellä: far more money, a lot less time. Monikollisten laskettavien kanssa sanotaan much more -ilmauksen sijaan many more tai far more: There were many more people than last year.
Kuinka samanlainen: sana ilmauksen as … as edellä.
| The new phone is just as good as the old one. | ihan yhtä hyvä, täsmälleen samanlainen |
| My flat is nearly as big as yours. | melkein yhtä iso |
| The film isn't nearly as good as the book. | ei läheskään yhtä hyvä |
Kuinka monta kertaa: kertaluku. Suomeksi ”kaksi kertaa kalliimpi”, ”kolme kertaa isompi”. Englannissa kertojen määrä tulee ilmauksen as … as eteen:
| Her flat is twice as expensive as mine. | kaksi kertaa niin kallis |
| The new bridge is three times as long as the old one. | kolme kertaa niin pitkä |
| The train takes half as long as the bus. | puolet vähemmän aikaa |
| This phone is half the price of that one. | puolet halvempi |
| They earn twice as much as we do. | ansaitsevat kaksi kertaa enemmän |
”Kaksi kertaa” on twice, ei ✗ two times; sitten three times, four times. ”Puolet pienempi, halvempi, lyhyempi” on helpointa sanoa half-sanalla: half the price, half the size, half as long. Kuulet myös muodon three times more expensive than — niinkin sanotaan, etenkin uutisissa. Mutta three times as expensive as on varmempi: se ymmärretään yksiselitteisesti.
Muutos: komparatiivi kahdesti. ”Yhä kylmempää”, ”yhä kalliimpaa” — komparatiivi, and ja sama komparatiivi uudelleen. Tavallisesti verbin get tai become kanssa:
| It's getting colder and colder. | Tulee yhä kylmempää. |
| The days are getting longer and longer. | Päivät pitenevät pitenemistään. |
| Flats are getting more and more expensive. | Asunnot kallistuvat kallistumistaan. |
| I'm getting better and better at it. | Osaan sen yhä paremmin. |
| We see each other less and less. | Näemme yhä harvemmin. |
Pitkissä adjektiiveissa toistetaan vain more: more and more expensive, ei ✗ more expensive and more expensive.
Yksi muuttuu toisen mukana: the …, the …. ”Mitä enemmän…, sitä parempi”. Kumpikin osa alkaa sanalla the ja komparatiivilla, ja subjekti ja verbi tulevat perässä:
| The more I practise, the better I speak. | Mitä enemmän harjoittelen, sitä paremmin puhun. |
| The longer we waited, the angrier he got. | Mitä kauemmin odotimme, sitä vihaisemmaksi hän tuli. |
| The older I get, the less I sleep. | Mitä vanhemmaksi tulen, sitä vähemmän nukun. |
| The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there. | Mitä aikaisemmin lähdemme, sitä aikaisemmin olemme perillä. |
Komparatiivi siirtyy alkuun yhdessä oman sanansa kanssa: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired ja mistakes tulevat heti sanan more jälkeen. Lyhyet sanonnat tulevat toimeen ilman verbiä: The sooner, the better. — ”Mitä pikemmin, sitä parempi”. The bigger, the better. Osien väliin tulee pilkku.
Muutos numeroina: by. Kun kerrot, kuinka paljon jokin nousi tai laski, tarvitset preposition by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. — ”Hinnat ovat nousseet kymmenellä prosentilla”. The number of visitors fell by half. — ”Kävijämäärä putosi puoleen”. Taso, johon päädyttiin, on to: The price rose to five pounds. — ”Hinta nousi viiteen puntaan”. Verbit: ylöspäin — go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; alaspäin — go down, fall, drop.
Lisää esimerkkejä:
| The second exam was a lot easier. | Toinen koe oli paljon helpompi. |
| Could you speak a little more slowly? | Voisitko puhua vähän hitaammin? |
| It's by far the best café in town. | Se on ehdottomasti kaupungin paras kahvila. |
by far vahvistaa superlatiivia: ”ehdottomasti, ylivoimaisesti”.
Näin ei sanota. ✗ much more better → ✓ much better. Komparatiivi muodostetaan yhdellä tavalla: joko -er tai more (A2 #7), ja much tulee valmiin muodon eteen.
Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”vähän kalliimpi”? Miten englanniksi ”puolet halvempi”? Kokoa lauseista I read more ja I understand more yksi lause rakenteella the …, the ….

Suomenkielisten virheet
kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi”Kaksi kertaa” ja ”puolet halvempi”
✗ two times bigger, ✗ half cheaper → ✓ twice as big, ✓ half the price. Suomen ”kaksi kertaa isompi” ja puhekielen ”puolet halvempi” käännetään sana sanalta. Englannissa kahdesta kerrasta sanotaan twice as … as, ja puolikkaasta half the price tai half as … as.
the …, the … ilman sanaa the
✗ More I practise, better I speak
✓ The more I practise, the better I speak
✗ more expensive and more expensive
✓ more and more expensive
Suomessa komparatiivi on aina yksi sana, ja ”kalliimmaksi ja kalliimmaksi” toistaa sen kokonaan. Englannissa pitkästä adjektiivista toistetaan vain more, lyhyestä -er-muoto: colder and colder.
with sanan by paikalla
✗ Prices have gone up with ten per cent
✓ Prices have gone up by ten per cent
Suomen ”kymmenellä prosentilla” on adessiivissa, ja -lla-pääte käännetään helposti sanalla with. Muutoksen suuruus ilmaistaan englanniksi prepositiolla by.

4 minPaino on vahvistussanalla ja komparatiivilla:
It's much cheaper. It's even colder.
Kun haluat korostaa, kuinka suuri ero on, ääni painuu juuri sanalle much, far, even.
Rakenteessa the …, the … kumpikin komparatiivi on painollinen. Ensimmäinen osa päättyy nousevaan sävelkulkuun, toinen laskevaan:
The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.
Heikot muodot: as ilmauksessa twice as big as ääntyy /əz/, than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/. Paino on sanalla twice ja adjektiivilla.
Oppitunnin sanat: twice /twaɪs/ — lopussa soinniton /s/; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — toisessa tavussa ei juuri vokaalia; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — paino tavulla cent.
Teksti
5 minTwo years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.
Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.
The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.
Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.
But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
