Mostrar l'evolució i comparar
18 minA l'A2 #7 vas aprendre a comparar: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as. Allà mateix hi havia much cheaper, «molt més barat».
| quant | paraules | exemple |
|---|---|---|
| molt | much, far, a lot | This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable. |
| una mica | a bit, a little, slightly | It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher. |
| encara (més del que ja era) | even | It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder. |
a lot i a bit són col·loquials; far i slightly, neutres: s'escriuen també als informes. much va bé a tot arreu. even vol dir que la primera cosa ja era així: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.
Les mateixes paraules funcionen amb els adverbis (She drives much more carefully than me) i amb more, less davant d'un nom: far more money, a lot less time. Amb els comptables en plural, en lloc de much more es diu many more o far more: There were many more people than last year.
Quant s'assemblen: la paraula davant d'as … as.
| The new phone is just as good as the old one. | igual de bo, gens pitjor |
| My flat is nearly as big as yours. | gairebé igual de gran |
| The film isn't nearly as good as the book.
| Her flat is twice as expensive as mine. | el doble de car |
| The new bridge is three times as long as the old one. | tres vegades més llarg |
| The train takes half as long as the bus. | la meitat de temps |
| This phone is half the price of that one. | la meitat de preu |
| They earn twice as much as we do. | guanyen el doble |
«Dues vegades» és twice, no ✗ two times; després, three times, four times. «La meitat de car, de gran, de llarg» es diu millor amb half: half the price, half the size, half as long. També sentiràs three times more expensive than: també es diu així, sobretot a les notícies. Però three times as expensive as és més segur: s'entén sense ambigüitat.
El canvi: el comparatiu dues vegades. «Cada vegada més fred», «cada vegada més car»: el comparatiu, and i el mateix comparatiu una altra vegada. Normalment amb get o become:
| It's getting colder and colder. | Cada vegada fa més fred. |
| The days are getting longer and longer. | Els dies són cada vegada més llargs. |
| Flats are getting more and more expensive. | Els pisos són cada vegada més cars. |
| I'm getting better and better at it. | Cada vegada em surt millor. |
| We see each other less and less. | Ens veiem cada vegada menys. |
Amb els adjectius llargs només es repeteix more: more and more expensive, no ✗ more expensive and more expensive.
| The more I practise, the better I speak. | Com més practico, millor parlo. |
| The longer we waited, the angrier he got. | Com més esperàvem, més s'enfadava. |
| The older I get, the less I sleep. | Com més gran em faig, menys dormo. |
| The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there. |
El comparatiu se'n va al principi juntament amb la seva paraula: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make: tired i mistakes van just darrere de more. Les fórmules curtes no porten verb: The sooner, the better. — «Com més aviat, millor». The bigger, the better.
The number of visitors fell by half. Els verbs: cap amunt, go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; cap avall, go down, fall, drop.
Més exemples:
| The second exam was a lot easier. |
| Could you speak a little more slowly? |
| It's by far the best café in town. |
by far reforça el superlatiu: «sens dubte, amb molta diferència».
Així no es diu. ✗ much more better → ✓ much better. El comparatiu es fa d'una sola manera, o amb -er o amb more (A2 #7), i much va davant de la forma ja feta.
Posa't a prova. Uneix I read more i I understand more en una sola frase amb the …, the ….

✗ very cheaper
✗ much more cheaper
✓ much cheaper
✗ It costs the double, ✗ the half of the price, ✗ two times bigger → ✓ It costs twice as much, ✓ half the price, ✓ twice as big.
✗ every time more expensive, ✗ more and more cold → ✓ more and more expensive, ✓ colder and colder. every time vol dir «cada vegada que passa una cosa», no un canvi gradual. I l'adjectiu curt es repeteix amb -er.
«Com més…, més…» sense the
✗ More I practise, better I speak
✓ The more I practise, the better I speak
I «com més et canses» no és ✗ the more you get tired, sinó the more tired you get.
«Han pujat un deu per cent»
✗ Prices have gone up a ten per cent
✗ in ten per cent
✓ by ten per cent
It's much cheaper. It's even colder.
The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.
Formes febles: as a twice as big as sona /əz/; than, /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/.
Text
5 minTwo years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.
Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.
The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.
Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.
But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

Escriptura
Model
My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
