มาก much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
นิดหน่อย a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
ยิ่งกว่าเดิมอีก even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot และ a bit เป็นภาษาพูด far และ slightly เป็นกลาง ใช้เขียนในรายงานได้ด้วย much ใช้ได้ทุกที่ even แปลว่าสิ่งแรกก็เป็นแบบนั้นอยู่แล้ว: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very ใช้กับขั้นกว่าไม่ได้: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper very เพิ่มน้ำหนักให้ลักษณะนั้นเอง (very cheap) ส่วนความต่างระหว่างสองสิ่งวัดด้วย much และ far

(She drives much more carefully than me) และกับ more, less หน้าคำนาม: far more money, a lot less time กับคำนามนับได้รูปพหูพจน์ แทนที่จะใช้ much more จะใช้ many more หรือ far more: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

“สองเท่า” คือ twice ไม่ใช่ ✗ two times ต่อจากนั้นคือ three times, four times “ราคาครึ่งเดียว”, “ขนาดครึ่งเดียว”, “ใช้เวลาครึ่งเดียว” สะดวกที่สุดคือใช้ half: half the price, half the size, half as long คุณจะได้ยิน three times more expensive than ด้วย — คนพูดแบบนี้เหมือนกัน โดยเฉพาะในข่าว แต่ three times as expensive as ปลอดภัยกว่า: ทุกคนเข้าใจตรงกัน

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

คำคุณศัพท์ยาวซ้ำแค่ more: more and more expensive ไม่ใช่ ✗ more expensive and more expensive

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired และ mistakes อยู่ติดหลัง more ทันที สูตรสั้น ๆ ไม่ต้องมีกริยา: The sooner, the better. — “ยิ่งเร็วยิ่งดี” The bigger, the better.

การเปลี่ยนแปลงเป็นตัวเลข: by ถ้าจะบอกว่าบางอย่างเพิ่มขึ้นหรือลดลงเท่าไร ต้องใช้คำบุพบท by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. — “จำนวน ผู้มาเยือนลดลงครึ่งหนึ่ง” ระดับที่ไปถึง — to: The price rose to five pounds. — “ราคาขึ้นไปเป็นห้าปอนด์” กริยา: ขึ้น — go up, rise (B1 บทที่ 13), increase; ลง — go down, fall, drop

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

ไม่พูดแบบนี้ ✗ much more better → ✓ much better ขั้นกว่าสร้างได้วิธีเดียว: -er หรือ more (A2 บทที่ 7) และ much วางหน้ารูปที่สร้างเสร็จแล้ว

รวม I read more และ I understand more เป็นประโยคเดียวด้วย the …, the …

a bit more expensive หรือ slightly more expensive; half the price (หรือ half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand.

1

very กับขั้นกว่า

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

2

“สองเท่า” เป็น two times

✗ two times bigger → ✓ twice as big; “ราคาครึ่งเดียว” → ✓ half the price “ใหญ่กว่าสองเท่า” แปลทีละคำ: “สองเท่า” → two times แล้วต่อด้วยขั้นกว่า แต่ภาษาอังกฤษใช้ twice as … as และ “สองเท่า” เป็นคำเดียว — twice

3

the …, the …

✗ More I practise, better I speak → ✓ The more I practise, the better I speak ✗ The more you become tired… → ✓ The more tired you become…

4

“ขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ” เป็น more and more กับทุกคำ

✗ more and more cold

✓ colder and colder

คำคุณศัพท์ ไทยไม่เปลี่ยนรูป — “หนาวขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ”, “แพงขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ” — จึงใช้ more and more สูตรเดียวกับทุกคำ แต่คำคุณศัพท์ สั้นซ้ำรูป -er ส่วนคำยาวซ้ำแค่ more: more and more expensive

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

ใน the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

รูปเสียงเบา: as ใน twice as big as ออกเสียง /əz/, than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/ เสียงหนักอยู่ที่ twice และที่คำคุณศัพท์

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
