A2 के पाठ 7 में आपने तुलना करना सीखा: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as।

कहीं ज़्यादा much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
थोड़ा-सा a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
और भी (पहले से ही ऐसा था) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very उत्तरावस्था के साथ नहीं आता: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper।

(She drives much more carefully than me) और संज्ञा से पहले more, less के साथ भी चलते हैं: far more money, a lot less time। बहुवचन गिनने योग्य संज्ञाओं के साथ much more की जगह many more या far more कहते हैं: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

“दोगुना” — twice, ✗ two times नहीं; आगे three times, four times। “आधा आकार”, “आधे दाम”, “आधा समय” — सबसे आसानी से half से: half the price, half the size, half as long। आप three times more expensive than भी सुनेंगे — ऐसे भी कहते हैं, ख़ासकर ख़बरों में। पर three times as expensive as ज़्यादा भरोसेमंद है: इसे सब एक ही तरह समझते हैं।

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

लंबे विशेषणों में केवल more दोहराया जाता है: more and more expensive, ✗ more expensive and more expensive नहीं।

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired और mistakes ठीक more के बाद हैं। छोटे सूत्रों में क्रिया नहीं होती: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better.

Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. जिस स्तर तक पहुँचे, उसके लिए — to: The price rose to five pounds. क्रियाएँ: ऊपर — go up, rise (पाठ 13), increase; नीचे — go down, fall, drop।

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

✗ much more better → ✓ much better।

I read more और I understand more से the …, the …

a bit more expensive या slightly more expensive; half the price (या half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand।

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

अंग्रेज़ी में very केवल cheap के साथ आता है; cheaper के साथ — much, far, a lot।

2

✗ much more better, ✗ more and more cold → ✓ much better, ✓ colder and colder।

3

“दोगुना” — two times।

✗ two times bigger

✓ twice as big

4

the …, the … बिना the के।

✗ More I practise, better I speak

✓ The more I practise, the better I speak

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

कमज़ोर रूप: twice as big as में as /əz/ सुनाई देता है, than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/।

पाठ के शब्द: twice /twaɪs/ — अंत में अघोष /s/; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — दूसरे शब्दांश में स्वर लगभग नहीं; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — बलाघात cent पर।

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
