V A2 #7 jste se naučili srovnávat: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as. Tam bylo i much cheaper – „mnohem levnější“. V B1 #28 se totéž objevilo u příslovcí: more carefully. Teď bude srovnání přesné. Řeknete, o kolik je jedno větší než druhé, kolikrát, jak se něco mění v čase a jak jedna změna táhne za sebou druhou.

O kolik: slovo před druhým stupněm.

o kolik slova příklad
mnohem much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
trochu a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
ještě (víc, než už tak je) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot a a bit jsou hovorové, far a slightly neutrální, píšou se i ve zprávách. much se hodí všude. even znamená, že už to první takové bylo: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very se s druhým stupněm nespojuje: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very zesiluje vlastnost samu o sobě (very cheap), kdežto rozdíl mezi dvěma věcmi měří much a far.

Stejná slova fungují s příslovci (She drives much more carefully than me) a s more, less před podstatným jménem: far more money, a lot less time. S počitatelnými v množném čísle se místo much more říká many more nebo far more: There were many more people than last year.

Nakolik podobné: slovo před as … as.

The new phone is just as good as the old one. o nic horší, úplně stejný
My flat is nearly as big as yours. skoro stejně velký
The film isn't nearly as good as the book. zdaleka ne tak dobrý

Kolikrát: násobky. Česky „dvakrát dražší“, „třikrát větší“. V angličtině se počet „-krát“ dává před as … as:

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine. dvakrát dražší
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one. třikrát delší
The train takes half as long as the bus. o polovinu kratší dobu
This phone is half the price of that one. o polovinu levnější
They earn twice as much as we do. vydělávají dvakrát víc

„Dvakrát“ je twice, ne ✗ two times; dál three times, four times. „O polovinu menší, levnější, kratší“ se nejpohodlněji řekne s half: half the price, half the size, half as long. Uslyšíte i three times more expensive than – tak se také mluví, hlavně ve zprávách. Ale three times as expensive as je spolehlivější: rozumí se mu jednoznačně.

Změna: druhý stupeň dvakrát. „Čím dál chladněji“, „stále dražší“ – druhý stupeň, and a znovu tentýž druhý stupeň. Obvykle s get nebo become:

It's getting colder and colder. Je čím dál chladněji.
The days are getting longer and longer. Dny jsou čím dál delší.
Flats are getting more and more expensive. Byty jsou čím dál dražší.
I'm getting better and better at it. Jde mi to čím dál líp.
We see each other less and less. Vídáme se čím dál méně.

U dlouhých přídavných jmen se opakuje jen more: more and more expensive, ne ✗ more expensive and more expensive.

Jedno se mění spolu s druhým: the …, the …. „Čím víc…, tím líp“. Obě části začínají the a druhým stupněm, podmět a sloveso jdou až za ním:

The more I practise, the better I speak. Čím víc cvičím, tím líp mluvím.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got. Čím déle jsme čekali, tím víc se zlobil.
The older I get, the less I sleep. Čím jsem starší, tím méně spím.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there. Čím dřív vyrazíme, tím dřív tam budeme.

Druhý stupeň jde na začátek i se svým slovem: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make – tired a mistakes stojí hned za more. Krátké formulky se obejdou bez slovesa: The sooner, the better. – „Čím dřív, tím líp.“ The bigger, the better. Mezi části se dává čárka.

Změna v číslech: by. Když chcete říct, o kolik něco stouplo nebo kleslo, potřebujete předložku by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. – „Ceny stouply o deset procent.“ The number of visitors fell by half. – „Počet návštěvníků klesl na polovinu.“ Úroveň, na kterou se došlo, je to: The price rose to five pounds. – „Cena stoupla na pět liber.“ Slovesa: nahoru – go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; dolů – go down, fall, drop.

Další příklady:

The second exam was a lot easier. Druhá zkouška byla mnohem lehčí.
Could you speak a little more slowly? Mohl byste mluvit trochu pomaleji?
It's by far the best café in town. Je to jednoznačně nejlepší kavárna ve městě.

by far zesiluje třetí stupeň: „jednoznačně, s velkým náskokem“.

Takhle se neříká. ✗ much more better → ✓ much better. Druhý stupeň se tvoří jedním způsobem: buď -er, nebo more (A2 #7), a much stojí před hotovým tvarem.

Vyzkoušejte se. Jak říct „o trochu dražší“? Jak anglicky „o polovinu levnější“? Spojte I read more a I understand more do jedné věty s the …, the ….

Chyby rodilých mluvčích češtiny

1

very s druhým stupněm

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

Hovorové „hodně levnější“ se překládá podle „hodně dobrý“ = very good, a tak vznikne very cheaper. Před druhým stupněm ale „hodně, mnohem“ je much, far nebo a lot.

2

„Dvakrát větší“

✗ twice bigger, ✗ two times bigger → ✓ twice as big, ✓ half the price.

3

the …, the … bez the nebo se špatným slovosledem

✗ More I practise, better I speak → ✓ The more I practise, the better I speak. ✗ The more you are tired… → ✓ The more tired you are…

4

Dlouhé přídavné jméno dvakrát

✗ more expensive and more expensive, ✗ more and more cold → ✓ more and more expensive, ✓ colder and colder. Česky stačí „čím dál dražší“ s jedním tvarem, a tak se „čím dál“ přeloží jako hotová formulka more and more ke každému slovu. U dlouhého přídavného jména se ale opakuje jen more, u krátkého tvar na -er.

Výslovnost

Přízvuk je na zesilovacím slově a na druhém stupni:

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

Když chcete zdůraznit, jak velký je rozdíl, hlas klesne právě na much, far, even.

V the …, the … jsou přízvučná obě slova ve druhém stupni. První část končí stoupavou intonací, druhá klesavou:

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

Slabé tvary: as v twice as big as zní /əz/, than – /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/.

Slova lekce: twice /twaɪs/ – na konci neznělé /s/; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ – druhá slabika skoro bez samohlásky; per cent /pə ˈsent/ – přízvuk na cent.

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

Vzor

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
