A2 #7'de karşılaştırmayı öğrendiniz: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as. B1 #28'de aynısı zarflarda görüldü: more carefully.

çok daha much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
biraz daha a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
daha da (zaten olandan fazla) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot ve a bit konuşma dilindedir, far ve slightly nötrdür, raporlarda da yazılır. much her yerde olur. even, ilk şeyin de zaten öyle olduğunu söyler: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller. — “Tom uzun, kardeşi ise daha da uzun”.

very karşılaştırma biçimiyle kullanılmaz: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very bir özelliği tek başına güçlendirir (very cheap); iki şey arasındaki farkı ise much ve far ölçer.

Aynı kelimeler zarflarla da (She drives much more carefully than me) ve isimden önceki more, less ile de çalışır: far more money, a lot less time. Çoğul sayılabilen isimlerde much more yerine many more ya da far more denir: There were many more people than last year.

Ne kadar benzer: as … as'tan önceki kelime.

The new phone is just as good as the old one. hiç de kötü değil, tıpatıp aynı
My flat is nearly as big as yours. neredeyse aynı büyüklükte
The film isn't nearly as good as the book. hiç de o kadar iyi değil

Kaç kat: katlar. Türkçede “iki kat pahalı”, “üç kat büyük” denir. İngilizcede kat sayısı as … as'ın önüne gelir:

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine. iki kat pahalı
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one. üç kat uzun
The train takes half as long as the bus. yarı yarıya az zaman
This phone is half the price of that one. yarı fiyatına
They earn twice as much as we do. iki kat fazla kazanıyorlar

“İki kat” — ✗ two times değil, twice; sonra three times, four times. “Yarı yarıya az, ucuz, kısa” en kolay half ile söylenir: half the price, half the size, half as long. three times more expensive than da duyacaksınız — böyle de denir, özellikle haberlerde. Ama three times as expensive as daha güvenlidir: tek bir biçimde anlaşılır.

Değişim: karşılaştırma biçimi iki kez. “Giderek soğuyor”, “gittikçe pahalılaşıyor” — karşılaştırma biçimi, and ve yine aynı biçim. Genellikle get ya da become ile:

It's getting colder and colder. Hava giderek soğuyor.
The days are getting longer and longer. Günler gittikçe uzuyor.
Flats are getting more and more expensive. Daireler giderek pahalılaşıyor.
I'm getting better and better at it. Bunu gittikçe daha iyi yapıyorum.
We see each other less and less. Gittikçe daha seyrek görüşüyoruz.

Uzun sıfatlarda yalnızca more tekrarlanır: more and more expensive; ✗ more expensive and more expensive değil.

Biri öbürüyle birlikte değişir: the …, the …. “Ne kadar çok …, o kadar iyi”. İki parça da the ve karşılaştırma biçimiyle başlar, özne ve fiil sonra gelir:

The more I practise, the better I speak. Pratik yaptıkça daha iyi konuşuyorum.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got. Biz bekledikçe o daha çok sinirlendi.
The older I get, the less I sleep. Yaşlandıkça daha az uyuyorum.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

Karşılaştırma biçimi kendi kelimesiyle birlikte başa geçer: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired ve mistakes hemen more'un arkasında durur. Kısa kalıplar fiilsiz olur: The sooner, the better. — “Ne kadar erken, o kadar iyi”. The bigger, the better. İki parçanın arasına virgül konur.

Rakamlarla değişim: by. Bir şeyin ne kadar arttığını ya da azaldığını söylemek için by edatı gerekir: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. — “Fiyatlar yüzde on arttı”. The number of visitors fell by half. — “Ziyaretçi sayısı yarı yarıya düştü”. Varılan düzey to ile söylenir: The price rose to five pounds. — “Fiyat beş sterline çıktı”. Fiiller: yukarı — go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; aşağı — go down, fall, drop.

Başka örnekler:

The second exam was a lot easier. İkinci sınav çok daha kolaydı.
Could you speak a little more slowly? Biraz daha yavaş konuşabilir misiniz?
It's by far the best café in town. Şehrin açık ara en iyi kafesi.

by far en üstünlük derecesini güçlendirir: “kesinlikle, açık ara”.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ much more better → ✓ much better. Karşılaştırma biçimi tek bir yolla kurulur: ya -er ya da more (A2 #7); much hazır biçimin önüne gelir.

Kendinizi sınayın. “Biraz daha pahalı” nasıl söylenir? “Yarı fiyatına” İngilizcede nasıl söylenir? I read more ve I understand more cümlelerinden the …, the … ile tek cümle kurun.

cevapları göster
a bit more expensive ya da slightly more expensive; half the price (ya da half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand.

Türkçe konuşanların hataları

diliniz için yazıldı
1

“Çok daha” → very

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

Oysa very yalnızca tek başına sıfatı güçlendirir (very cheap); farkı much, far, a lot ölçer.

2

“Daha” → her yerde more

✗ much more better, ✗ more and more cold → ✓ much better, ✓ colder and colder.

3

“İki kat daha büyük”

✗ twice bigger, ✗ two times bigger → ✓ twice as big, ✓ half the price. Türkçe kelime kelime çevrilir: “iki kat” — twice, “daha büyük” — bigger. İngilizcede kat sayısı as … as'ın önüne gelir.

4

the …, the … artikelsiz ya da yanlış sırayla

✗ More I practise, better I speak → ✓ The more I practise, the better I speak; ✗ The more you get tired… → ✓ The more tired you get… “Yorulmak” tek fiildir ve get tired bölünmeden kalır; oysa tired hemen more'un arkasına geçer.

Vurgu güçlendiricide ve karşılaştırma biçimindedir:

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

Farkın ne kadar büyük olduğunu vurgulamak istiyorsanız ses tam da much, far, even üzerine düşer.

the …, the …'da iki karşılaştırma kelimesi de vurguludur. Birinci parça yükselen tonla, ikincisi alçalan tonla biter:

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

Zayıf biçimler: twice as big as'taki as /əz/, than /ðən/ duyulur: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/. Vurgu twice'ta ve sıfattadır.

Dersin kelimeleri: twice /twaɪs/ — sonda ötümsüz /s/; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — ikinci hecede neredeyse ünlü yok; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — vurgu cent'te.

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

Örnek

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
