Στο A2 #7 έμαθες να συγκρίνεις: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as.

πολύ much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
λίγο a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
ακόμα (περισσότερο απ' ό,τι ήδη) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

Τα a lot και a bit είναι της κουβέντας, τα far και slightly είναι ουδέτερα, γράφονται και σε αναφορές. Το much ταιριάζει παντού. Το even σημαίνει ότι και το πρώτο ήταν ήδη έτσι: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

Το very με τον συγκριτικό βαθμό δεν συνδυάζεται: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. Το very δυναμώνει το ίδιο το χαρακτηριστικό (very cheap), ενώ τη διαφορά ανάμεσα σε δύο πράγματα τη μετράνε τα much και far.

Οι ίδιες λέξεις δουλεύουν και με επιρρήματα (She drives much more carefully than me) και με τα more, less πριν από ουσιαστικό: far more money, a lot less time. Με τα μετρήσιμα στον πληθυντικό αντί για much more λένε many more ή far more: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

Για το «δύο φορές» — twice, όχι ✗ two times· από εκεί και πέρα three times, four times. Το «μισό, τα μισά» — για κάτι φθηνότερο, μικρότερο, πιο σύντομο — λέγεται πιο εύκολα με half: half the price, half the size, half as long. Θα ακούσεις και three times more expensive than — έτσι λένε κι αυτό, ειδικά στις ειδήσεις. Αλλά το three times as expensive as είναι πιο σίγουρο: το καταλαβαίνουν μονοσήμαντα.

Συνήθως με get ή become:

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

Στα μεγάλα επίθετα επαναλαμβάνεται μόνο το more: more and more expensive, όχι ✗ more expensive and more expensive.

Το ένα αλλάζει μαζί με το άλλο: the …, the ….

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

Ο συγκριτικός βαθμός πηγαίνει στην αρχή μαζί με τη λέξη του: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — τα tired και mistakes μπαίνουν αμέσως μετά το more. Οι σύντομες φράσεις δεν χρειάζονται ρήμα: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better.

Αλλαγή σε αριθμούς: by. Για να πεις κατά πόσο ανέβηκε ή έπεσε κάτι, χρειάζεται η πρόθεση by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. Το επίπεδο στο οποίο φτάσαμε — to: The price rose to five pounds. Ρήματα: προς τα πάνω — go up, rise (B1 #13), increase· προς τα κάτω — go down, fall, drop.

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly? Μπορείτε να μιλάτε λίγο πιο αργά;
It's by far the best café in town.

✗ much more better → ✓ much better.

Πώς λες «λίγο πιο ακριβό»; Πώς λες στα αγγλικά «δύο φορές φθηνότερο» (δηλαδή «κοστίζει τα μισά»); Φτιάξε από τα I read more και I understand more μία πρόταση με the …, the ….

1

Το «πολύ» ως very

✗ very cheaper, ✗ very more expensive → ✓ much cheaper, ✓ much more expensive. Πριν από συγκριτικό βαθμό όμως μπαίνει much, far ή a lot.

2

✗ two times bigger, ✗ two times cheaper → ✓ twice as big, ✓ half the price. Στα αγγλικά για το δύο υπάρχει το twice as … as, και το «φθηνότερο, μικρότερο» λέγεται με half.

3

Το «πιο» ως more και στα μικρά επίθετα

✗ more and more cold, ✗ much more cheaper → ✓ colder and colder, ✓ much cheaper. Στα ελληνικά το «πιο κρύο» είναι εξίσου φυσικό με το «ψυχρότερο», οπότε το «όλο και πιο κρύο» γίνεται more and more cold.

4

the …, the … χωρίς the

✗ More I practise, better I speak

✓ The more I practise, the better I speak

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

Στο the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

Αδύναμοι τύποι: το as στο twice as big as ακούγεται /əz/, το than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/. Ο τόνος — στο twice και στο επίθετο.

Λέξεις του μαθήματος: twice /twaɪs/ — άηχο /s/ στο τέλος· slightly /ˈslaɪtli/· even /ˈiːvn/ — η δεύτερη συλλαβή σχεδόν χωρίς φωνήεν· per cent /pə ˈsent/ — ο τόνος στο cent.

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
