В A2 #7 ви навчилися порівнювати: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as.

набагато much, far, a lot This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable.
трохи a bit, a little, slightly It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher.
ще (більше, ніж і так) even It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder.

a lot і a bit — розмовні, far і slightly — нейтральні, їх пишуть і у звітах. much годиться скрізь. even означає, що й перше вже було таким: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.

very з вищим ступенем не поєднується: ✗ very cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. very підсилює ознаку саму по собі (very cheap), а різницю між двома речами вимірюють much і far.

(She drives much more carefully than me) і з more, less перед іменником: far more money, a lot less time. Із злічуваними в множині замість much more кажуть many more або far more: There were many more people than last year.

The new phone is just as good as the old one.
My flat is nearly as big as yours.
The film isn't nearly as good as the book.

Her flat is twice as expensive as mine.
The new bridge is three times as long as the old one.
The train takes half as long as the bus.
This phone is half the price of that one.
They earn twice as much as we do.

«Два рази» — twice, а не ✗ two times; далі three times, four times. «Удвічі менше, дешевше, коротше» найзручніше через half: half the price, half the size, half as long. Ви почуєте і three times more expensive than — так теж кажуть, особливо в новинах. Але three times as expensive as надійніше: його розуміють однозначно.

It's getting colder and colder.
The days are getting longer and longer.
Flats are getting more and more expensive.
I'm getting better and better at it.
We see each other less and less.

У довгих прикметників повторюється тільки more: more and more expensive, а не ✗ more expensive and more expensive.

The more I practise, the better I speak.
The longer we waited, the angrier he got.
The older I get, the less I sleep.
The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there.

The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired і mistakes стоять одразу після more. Короткі формули обходяться без дієслова: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better.

Зміна в цифрах: by. Щоб сказати, на скільки щось зросло чи впало, потрібен прийменник by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. The number of visitors fell by half. Рівень, до якого дійшли, — to: The price rose to five pounds. Дієслова: вгору — go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; вниз — go down, fall, drop.

The second exam was a lot easier.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
It's by far the best café in town.

✗ much more better → ✓ much better.

Складіть із I read more і I understand more одне речення з the …, the ….

a bit more expensive або slightly more expensive; half the price (або half as expensive); The more I read, the more I understand.

1

very з вищим ступенем

✗ very cheaper

✓ much cheaper

2

✗ in two times cheaper, ✗ two times bigger → ✓ half the price, ✓ twice as big. В англійській немає ні прийменника, ні two times: є twice as … as і half.

3

the …, the …

✗ More I practise, better I speak → ✓ The more I practise, the better I speak. ✗ The more you become tired… → ✓ The more tired you become…

✗ more expensive and more expensive, ✗ more and more cold → ✓ more and more expensive, ✓ colder and colder.

5

on замість by у цифрах

✗ Prices have gone up on ten per cent

✓ Prices have gone up by ten per cent

It's much cheaper. It's even colder.

У the …, the …

The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.

Слабкі форми: as у twice as big as звучить /əz/, than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/.

Слова уроку: twice /twaɪs/ — глухий /s/ у кінці; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — другий склад майже без голосного; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — наголос на cent.

Текст

Two years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.

Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.

The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.

Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.

But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
