18 minLa A2 #7 ai învățat să compari: cheaper than, more expensive than, as … as. Tot acolo era much cheaper — „mult mai ieftin”.
|---|---|---|
| mult | much, far, a lot | This flat is much bigger. The train is far more comfortable. |
| puțin | a bit, a little, slightly | It's a bit colder today. Prices are slightly higher. |
| și mai (decât era deja) | even | It was cold yesterday, but today it's even colder. |
a lot și a bit sunt colocviale, far și slightly — neutre, se scriu și în rapoarte. much merge oriunde. even înseamnă că și primul era deja așa: Tom is tall, but his brother is even taller.
Aceleași cuvinte merg și cu adverbele (She drives much more carefully than me) și cu more, less înaintea unui substantiv: far more money, a lot less time. Cu substantivele numărabile la plural, în loc de much more se spune many more sau far more: There were many more people than last year.
Cât de asemănător: cuvântul dinaintea lui as … as.
| The new phone is just as good as the old one. | deloc mai prost, exact la fel |
| My flat is nearly as big as yours. | aproape la fel de mare |
| The film isn't nearly as good as the book.
| Her flat is twice as expensive as mine. | de două ori mai scump |
| The new bridge is three times as long as the old one. | de trei ori mai lung |
| The train takes half as long as the bus. | de două ori mai puțin timp |
| This phone is half the price of that one. | de două ori mai ieftin |
| They earn twice as much as we do. | câștigă de două ori mai mult |
„De două ori” — twice, nu ✗ two times; mai departe three times, four times. „De două ori mai puțin, mai ieftin, mai scurt” se spune cel mai comod cu half: half the price, half the size, half as long. Vei auzi și three times more expensive than — și așa se spune, mai ales în știri. Dar three times as expensive as e mai sigur: e înțeles fără echivoc.
| It's getting colder and colder. | Se face din ce în ce mai frig. |
| The days are getting longer and longer. | Zilele sunt tot mai lungi. |
| Flats are getting more and more expensive. | Apartamentele sunt tot mai scumpe. |
| I'm getting better and better at it. | Îmi iese din ce în ce mai bine. |
| We see each other less and less. | Ne vedem tot mai rar. |
La adjectivele lungi se repetă doar more: more and more expensive, nu ✗ more expensive and more expensive.
| The more I practise, the better I speak. |
| The longer we waited, the angrier he got. |
| The older I get, the less I sleep. |
| The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there. |
Comparativul trece la început împreună cu cuvântul lui: The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make — tired și mistakes stau imediat după more. Formulele scurte se descurcă fără verb: The sooner, the better. The bigger, the better. Între părți se pune virgulă.
Schimbarea în cifre: by. Ca să spui cu cât a crescut sau a scăzut ceva, e nevoie de prepoziția by: Prices have gone up by ten per cent. — „Prețurile au crescut cu zece la sută”. The number of visitors fell by half. — „Numărul vizitatorilor a scăzut la jumătate”. Nivelul la care s-a ajuns — to: The price rose to five pounds. — „Prețul a crescut la cinci lire”. Verbele: în sus — go up, rise (B1 #13), increase; în jos — go down, fall, drop.
Încă exemple:
| The second exam was a lot easier. |
| Could you speak a little more slowly? | Puteți vorbi puțin mai rar? |
| It's by far the best café in town. |
by far întărește superlativul: „de departe, cu mult”.
Așa nu se spune. ✗ much more better → ✓ much better. Comparativul se formează într-un singur fel: ori -er, ori more (A2 #7), iar much stă înaintea formei gata făcute.
Verifică-te. Construiește din I read more și I understand more o singură propoziție cu the …, the ….

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română
adaptat pentru limba ta„Mai” tradus mereu cu more
„Mult mai ieftin” → ✗ much more cheap, ✗ much more cheaper → ✓ much cheaper. Dacă adjectivul ia -er, more e de prisos.
„De două ori mai…”
✗ two times bigger, ✗ twice bigger → ✓ twice as big; „de două ori mai ieftin” → ✗ two times cheaper → ✓ half the price. „De două ori” e twice, comparația se face cu as … as, iar „de două ori mai puțin” se spune prin half.
„Din ce în ce mai frig”
✗ more and more cold
✓ colder and colder
În română „mai” stă în fața oricărui adjectiv, și se pare că more and more merge peste tot. Dar el e doar pentru adjectivele lungi (more and more expensive); cele scurte își repetă forma în -er.
The more you are tired, the more you make mistakes → ✓ The more tired you are, the more mistakes you make.
„Prețurile au crescut cu zece la sută” → ✗ Prices have gone up with ten per cent → ✓ Prices have gone up by ten per cent.
It's much cheaper. It's even colder.
Dacă vrei să subliniezi cât de mare e diferența, vocea cade tocmai pe much, far, even.
În the …, the … sunt accentuate ambele cuvinte comparate.
The more I practise ↗, the better I speak ↘.
Formele slabe: as în twice as big as sună /əz/, than — /ðən/: twice as big as mine /ˈtwaɪs əz ˈbɪɡ əz ˈmaɪn/. Accentul — pe twice și pe adjectiv.
Cuvintele lecției: twice /twaɪs/ — /s/ surd la sfârșit; slightly /ˈslaɪtli/; even /ˈiːvn/ — a doua silabă aproape fără vocală; per cent /pə ˈsent/ — accentul pe cent.
Text
5 minTwo years ago we moved from the centre of Bristol to a village about twenty miles away. Was it the right decision? Here's an honest comparison.
Our new house is much bigger than our old flat — almost twice as big — and the rent is slightly lower. The garden is the best thing: the children play outside far more often than before, and they're much healthier.
The journey to work is the worst thing. It used to take me fifteen minutes; now it takes nearly an hour, four times as long. The trains are getting more and more crowded, and tickets are getting more and more expensive: this year the price went up by eight per cent.
Shopping is a bit more difficult, too. The village shop is nearly as expensive as a petrol station, so we drive to the supermarket once a week.
But life here is far quieter, and that matters to us more and more. Our friends in the city say the village is too far from everything. Maybe. But the longer we live here, the more we like it. And the older I get, the less I want to live with noise.

Scriere
Model
My new office is much smaller than the old one, but it's far closer to my home. The journey takes half as long, so I have a lot more free time. The rent in this area is getting higher and higher, though. My colleagues are slightly younger, and the atmosphere is even friendlier. The longer I work here, the happier I feel.
