„Buvo taip šalta, kad likome namie.“ „Tai buvo tokia ilga diena, kad iškart užmigau.“ Lietuviški „taip“ ir „toks“ skiriasi kaip prieveiksmis ir įvardis, ir anglų kalboje jiems atitinka du žodžiai — so ir such. Tarp jų renkamasi ne pagal prasmę, o pagal tai, kas eina po jų.

Forma. so + būdvardis arba prieveiksmis; such + daiktavardis, su būdvardžiu arba be jo. Pasekmė prijungiama per that.

It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + būdvardis
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + prieveiksmis
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + būdvardis + daiktavardis
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + daugiskaita
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + neskaičiuojamas daiktavardis

Taisyklė viena eilute: jei po „taip“ ar „toks“ stovi daiktavardis — such; jei tik būdvardis arba prieveiksmis — so. Galima patikrinti ir lietuviškai: „taip šalta“ — so, „tokia šalta diena“ — such. Bet lietuviškas „toks“ be daiktavardžio — „jis toks geras“ — vis tiek so: He's so kind. Lemia ne lietuviškas žodis, o tai, ar po jo yra angliškas daiktavardis.

Artikelis. Su skaičiuojamu vienaskaitos daiktavardžiu a stoja po such: such a nice day, such an interesting book. Prieš daugiskaitą ir neskaičiuojamą daiktavardį artikelio nėra: such nice people, such good news, such bad weather.

so su kiekiu. Prieš much, many, few, little visada so, nors toliau eina daiktavardis: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. Priežastis ta, kad so čia stovi prieš kiekio žodį, o ne prieš daiktavardį. Vietoj so many ir so much šnekamojoje kalboje sakoma ir such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

that galima praleisti. Pokalbyje that dažnai iškrenta: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

Klausime ir neiginyje taisyklė ta pati: Why are you so tired? — „Kodėl tu toks pavargęs?“ I've never seen such a beautiful garden. — „Niekada nesu matęs tokio gražaus sodo“. Kablelio prieš that nededa: pasekmė glaudžiai susijusi su pirmąja dalimi. Lietuviškai prieš „kad“ kablelis būtinas, todėl ranka jį deda ir angliškai — nedėkite.

Kaip tarti. so ir such šiose frazėse kirčiuoti — ant jų laikosi visa mintis: It was SO cold…, It was SUCH a long day…. O that nekirčiuotas: /ðət/. Jei kirtį nuimsite, frazė nuskambės kaip paprastas pranešimas be pabrėžimo.

Be pasekmės — šūksnis. so ir such stiprina ir patys, be that: It's so cold today! She's such a nice person! Tai emocingiau nei very: very praneša, o so ir such sušunka.

Palyginkite su too (A1 #18) ir enough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. taip šalta, kad… — pasekmė įvardyta
It was too cold to go out. per šalta, kad…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. nepakankamai šilta, kad…

Prasmė artima, bet so … that pasakoja, kas nutiko, o too … to — ko padaryti nebuvo galima.

It was such a long journey that we stopped twice. Kelionė buvo tokia ilga, kad stojome du kartus.
The film was so boring that half the audience left. Filmas buvo toks nuobodus, kad pusė salės išėjo.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British. Ji taip gerai kalba angliškai, kad ją palaiko brite.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train. Buvau taip pavargęs, kad užmigau traukinyje.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people.

Pasitikrinkite. so ar such: It was ___ a good idea? Kaip pasakyti „Ten buvo tiek žmonių, kad negalėjome įeiti“? Kas negerai sakinyje It was a such boring film?
