It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + adjektiivi
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + adverbi
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + adjektiivi + substantiivi
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + monikko
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + ei-laskettava

Sääntö yhdellä rivillä: jos ”niin”-sanan jälkeen tulee substantiivi — such; jos vain adjektiivi tai adverbi — so. Suomesta ei tässä ole apua: ”niin kylmä” on so cold, mutta ”niin kylmä päivä” on such a cold day. Ilman substantiivia on aina so: ”Hän on niin kiltti” — He's so kind. Ratkaisee se, tuleeko englannissa perään substantiivi.

Artikkeli. Laskettavan substantiivin yksikössä a tulee such-sanan jälkeen: such a nice day, such an interesting book. Monikon ja ei-laskettavan edessä artikkelia ei ole: such nice people, such good news, such bad weather.

so määrän kanssa. Sanojen much, many, few, little edessä on aina so, vaikka perässä tulee substantiivi: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. Rakenteiden so many ja so much sijaan puhekielessä sanotaan myös such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

that voi jäädä pois. Puheessa that jää usein pois: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

Kysymyksessä ja kiellossa sääntö on sama: Why are you so tired? — ”Miksi olet niin väsynyt?” I've never seen such a beautiful garden.

Miten ääntää. so ja such ovat näissä lauseissa painollisia — niiden varassa on koko ajatus: It was SO cold…, It was SUCH a long day…. that taas on painoton: /ðət/. Jos painon jättää pois, lause kuulostaa tavalliselta tiedolta ilman korostusta.

Ilman seurausta — huudahdus. so ja such vahvistavat myös yksinään, ilman that-sanaa: It's so cold today! She's such a nice person! Tämä on tunteikkaampaa kuin very: very kertoo, so ja such huudahtavat.

Vertaa sanoihin too (A1 #18) ja enough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. niin kylmä, että… — seuraus kerrotaan
It was too cold to go out. liian kylmä, jotta…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. ei tarpeeksi lämmin, jotta…

Merkitys on lähellä, mutta so … that kertoo, mitä tapahtui, ja too … to — mitä ei voinut tehdä.

Lisää esimerkkejä:

The coffee was so hot that I burnt my tongue. Kahvi oli niin kuumaa, että poltin kieleni.
It was such a long journey that we stopped twice. Matka oli niin pitkä, että pysähdyimme kahdesti.
The film was so boring that half the audience left.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train. Olin niin väsynyt, että nukahdin junassa.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people.

Testaa itsesi. so vai such: It was ___ a good idea? Mikä on vialla lauseessa It was a such boring film?

Minituotos

Kerro ääneen ja kirjoita kymmenen lausetta: ryhmästäsi tai työyhteisöstäsi; arvostelu hiljattain ostamastasi tavarasta; mistä kesäsuunnitelmasi riippuvat; miten teet jotakin muihin verrattuna; tilanne, jossa jokin meni pieleen. Ainakin yksi lause so … that -rakenteella ja yksi such … that -rakenteella.

Muistilista ennen oppituntia 31:

  • onko of vain sanojen the, my, these tai pronominin edellä?
  • onko so adjektiivin edellä ja such a substantiivin edellä?
