«كان الجوّ بارداً لدرجة أنّنا بقينا في البيت». «كان يوماً طويلاً لدرجة أنّني نمتُ فوراً». في العربية تخدم «لدرجة أنّ» الجملتين معاً، أمّا الإنجليزية فلها هنا كلمتان — so وsuch. والاختيار بينهما لا يقرّره المعنى، بل ما يأتي بعدهما.

الصيغة. so + صفة أو ظرف؛ such + اسم، مع صفة أو بدونها. وتُربَط النتيجة بـthat.

It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + صفة
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + ظرف
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + صفة + اسم
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + جمع
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + غير معدود

القاعدة في سطر واحد: إن جاء بعدها اسم — such؛ وإن جاءت صفة أو ظرف وحدهما — so. والعربية لا تساعد هنا: «لدرجة أنّ» واحدة في الحالتين. فانظر إلى الجملة الإنجليزية: «بارداً» وحدها — so cold، و«يوماً بارداً» — such a cold day. وإن لم يأتِ بعد الصفة اسم — «إنه لطيف جداً» — فهي so أيضاً: He's so kind. يقرّر الأمرَ وجودُ اسم إنجليزي بعد الكلمة.

الأداة. مع الاسم المعدود المفرد تأتي a بعد such: such a nice day، such an interesting book. وقبل الجمع وغير المعدود لا أداة: such nice people، such good news، such bad weather.

so مع الكمية. قبل much وmany وfew وlittle تأتي so دائماً، رغم أنّ بعدها اسماً: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. والسبب أنّ so هنا تقف قبل كلمة الكمية، لا قبل الاسم. وبدل so many وso much يُقال في الحديث أيضاً such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

يمكن حذف that. في الحديث كثيراً ما تسقط that: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

في السؤال والنفي القاعدة نفسها: Why are you so tired? — «لماذا أنت متعب هكذا؟» I've never seen such a beautiful garden. — «لم أرَ في حياتي حديقة بهذا الجمال». ولا توضع فاصلة قبل that: النتيجة مرتبطة بالجزء الأول ارتباطاً وثيقاً.

كيف تُنطق. so وsuch في هذه الجمل منبورتان — عليهما تقوم الفكرة كلّها: It was SO cold…، It was SUCH a long day…. أمّا that فغير منبورة: /ðət/. وإن أُزيل النبر بدت الجملة خبراً عادياً بلا تشديد.

بلا نتيجة — تعجّب. so وsuch تقوّيان بنفسهما أيضاً، بلا that: It's so cold today! — «ما أبرد اليوم!» She's such a nice person! — «يا لها من إنسانة لطيفة!» وهذا أكثر انفعالاً من very: very تُخبر، وso وsuch تتعجّبان.

قارن مع too (A1 #18) وenough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. بارد لدرجة أنّ… — النتيجة مذكورة
It was too cold to go out. بارد أكثر من اللازم لكي…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. ليس دافئاً بما يكفي لكي…

المعنى متقارب، لكنّ so … that تروي ما حدث، وtoo … to — ما لم يكن ممكناً فعله.

أمثلة أخرى:

The coffee was so hot that I burnt my tongue. كانت القهوة ساخنة لدرجة أنّني أحرقتُ لساني.
It was such a long journey that we stopped twice. كانت الرحلة طويلة لدرجة أنّنا توقّفنا مرّتين.
The film was so boring that half the audience left. كان الفيلم مملّاً لدرجة أنّ نصف الحضور غادروا.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British. تتكلّم الإنجليزية جيداً لدرجة أنّ الناس يظنّونها بريطانية.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train. كنتُ متعباً لدرجة أنّني نمتُ في القطار.

هكذا لا يُقال. ✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people.

اختبر نفسك. so أم such: It was ___ a good idea؟ كيف تقول «كان هناك ناس كثيرون لدرجة أنّنا لم نستطع الدخول»؟ ما الخطأ في It was a such boring film؟
